Take Back The Night

Take back the nightApril 29th 6:30 PM at the Bear Paw

Take Back the Night is a nationally recognized event that serves as a visible way to take a stand against sexual violence, specifically violence against women. In light of recent and past sexual assault and violence acts on campus and in the community, this event is especially needed this year.

Imagine: A woman walks alone down a dark, deserted street. With every shadow she sees, and every sound she hears, her pounding heart flutters and skips a beat. She hurries her pace as she sees her destination become closer. She is almost there. She reaches the front door, goes inside, collects herself, and moves on forgetting, at least for tonight, the gripping fear that momentarily enveloped her life. This scene could have occurred anywhere last night, last year, or even 100 years ago. Historically, women faced the anxiety of walking alone at night and that is why Take Back the Night began.

Join VOX–Voices for Planned Parenthood at Missouri State, Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Sigma Alpha, BiGALA, Omega Delta Phi, and the Missouri State departments of Gender Studies, Criminology, and Social Work for a night of entertaininment, speakers and demonstrations, and a candlelight vigil and march in honor of those women who have affected by sexual assault and abuse and to support survivors of dating and domestic violence. Help us shatter the silence and shatter the violence.

Event is free and open to the public.

Invisible Children Screening

April 21 4:45PM – 6:00PM  PSU Theatre

In the spring of 2003, three young filmmakers traveled to Africa in search of a story. What started out as a filmmaking adventure transformed into much more when these boys from Southern California discovered a tragedy that disgusted and inspired them, a tragedy where children are both the weapons and the victims.

After returning to the States, they created the documentary “Invisible Children: Rough Cut,” a film that exposes the tragic realities of northern Uganda’s night commuters and child soldiers.

The film was originally shown to friends and family, but has now been seen by millions of people. The overwhelming response has been, “How can I help?” To answer this question, the non-profit Invisible Children, Inc. was created, giving compassionate individuals an effective way to respond to the situation.

The documentary will be shown, and the Invisible Children will present along with Pepito and Geoffrey who were featured in the documentary as children.  Merch booths along with STAND information will also be available.
