From the outset of his presidency, he envisioned a university that not only excelled in academics but also fostered a community of inclusivity and innovation. Under his steadfast leadership, our institution has flourished, expanding its academic programs, enhancing research initiatives, and embracing a welcoming community for all.

He guided us through significant changes, such as updating the university’s mission with the Coordinating Board of Higher Education to include professional doctorate degrees. He also navigated challenges like crafting protocols to combat the pandemic while minimizing coursework interruptions. He has always been unwavering with his dedication and commitment to our students, faculty and staff, and alumni.

Beyond his strategic vision, President Smart has been a compassionate leader, known for his warmth, empathy, and genuine concern for the well-being of everyone in our Bear family. He has not only led with intelligence but also with heart, making his presidency a truly transformative experience for us all.

As we reflect on his tenure, we are reminded of the countless achievements and milestones that define his legacy. Through his leadership, we have not only grown as an institution but also as a community bound by shared values and a common purpose.

Enrollment, alumni, and philanthropic impact:

• Enrollment grew from 21,000 to over 24,000 – a 14% increase
• 61,331 total undergraduate and graduate degrees were conferred
• The MSU Foundation realized over $300,000,000 in private philanthropy

President Smart, your impact will resonate far beyond your time here. You leave behind a university strengthened and inspired, ready to embrace the future with confidence and resilience. Your legacy will continue to guide us as we embark on new journeys and face new challenges.
