Soon, all current MSU students and employees will have Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR) activated on their accounts. You will be notified prior to SSPR activation on your account, so be on the lookout for an email from us.
What is Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR)
Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR) is a Microsoft service that allows users who have forgotten their account password, or who have been locked out by having too many failed login attempts, to set a new password and unlock their account if needed.
Since last year, all new Missouri State students and employees have had SSPR activated when their accounts are created. We are now in the process of enrolling existing employees and students into this service.
How to Prepare for SSPR
- Review the authentication options below, and decide which options are right for you.
- Visit www.missouristate.edu/securitysetup and register any phone numbers, email, or mobile apps you will use as your authentication methods.
If you don’t complete this step before SSPR is activated, you will be prompted to do so on your first sign-in after activation.
We realize this timing can be disruptive. If you are not ready to provide the needed information or are working on time-sensitive activities, you may click ‘Skip setup’ and delay your registration. You will then be prompted each time you log in until two of the approved authentication methods have been set up.
SSPR requires you to set up at least two of these approved authentication options listed below.
You can always go to www.missouristate.edu/securitysetup to check or make changes to the alternative authentication methods you set up for your account.
- Microsoft Authenticator mobile app – With this app, you can provide your second authentication method by simply responding to a notification on your phone. It also supports authentication with a six-digit code, which can be used when no data connection is available. You can download the Microsoft Authenticator app for free from the iOS App Store or the Google Play app store.
- Telephone (choosing text, voice, or both counts as one option)
- Text message to a mobile phone – When a second authentication factor is required, you can have a six-digit code texted to your mobile phone.
- Voice call to any phone number – With this option, you will receive a voice call when a second authentication factor is required and can respond by pushing # on the phone keypad when prompted.
- Non-University Email Address – With this option, you will receive an email that includes a six-digit code. This cannot be a Missouri State email account.
What does SSPR mean for you?
Once SSPR activated for your account, the next time you are locked out of your account for too many failed login attempts, or if you have forgotten or want to change your password, you can just go to www.missouristate.edu/passwordreset.
Forgotten passwords and locked accounts can be extremely frustrating, so Computer Services is excited to be able to provide SSPR to address these issues without having to call the Help Desk.
