Mike McCoy: respected financial services leader, entrepreneur and author
A 1983 graduate of Missouri State University and alumnus of the college of business, Mike established an impressive career as a financial services leader, entrepreneur and author.
Currently, Mike is involved in a small portfolio of startup companies, providing private equity consulting. He also serves as president of Heartland VIPs, a rewards and loyalty company for small retail oriented businesses, and is a current board member and previous CEO of SpendSmart Payment Company. During his time as CEO Mike established a new strategic direction for the company, rebranded it and relocated it to Des Moines, IA. During Mike’s tenure SpendSmart earned industry recognition as the Best Youth/Student Prepaid card for 2012.
Prior to SpendSmart, Mike served as an executive business leader for more than 10 years with Wells Fargo and Company, most recently as President and head of Wells Fargo Consumer Credit Cards where he was responsible for $20 billion in receivables and 4,000 team members. He was also the Executive Vice President and General Manager of financial services for ING’s Financial Institution division, and the Chief Marketing Officer and Sales Leader for Third Party Distribution at American Express Financial Advisors.
During his time at MSU, Mike started his leadership training off strong by serving as the Student Government Association (SGA) president. “My 4 years at MSU were outstanding and set me up for success in my career…there were opportunities on campus to lead and get involved at an early age. The experiences help me even today. “
Mike’s advice to current students and young alumni is to identify their strengths. “People usually become successful by doing things at which they excel. Understand what your strengths and core competencies are and align those with career opportunities and success will follow.”
Recently, Mike coauthored his first book, “It Begs the Question-Learn how the best managers drive performance through Question Centric Coaching.” He resides in Des Moines, IA with his wife Rhonda and three sons. In his spare time, he enjoys golf, travel, running and family activities.
