Although competing virtually can be a challenge, Missouri State Future Business Leaders of America – Phi Beta Lambda (FBLA-PBL) students excelled as they competed virtually with students from across the state.
The event, originally scheduled to take place April 19-21 in Springfield, Missouri, was moved to an entirely online format due to COVID-19. This created an unforeseen environment for the competition.
“It was a challenge, but our members navigated the process flawlessly and performed exceptionally well under the leadership of Treaver Weohr,” said Courtney Pham, senior marketing instructor and chapter advisor.
Overcoming the transition
Members typically participate in three types of events: online objective tests, performance events and events based on both.
This year, students were given a window to complete their events with times various windows of time. Since performance events are normally done in front of judges, they took place over three days via video conference. MSU students also uploaded videos while objective testing was open.
“I am so incredibly proud of the hard work my members put into this organization. We went from being one of the smallest chapters to having a top performance at state,” said Treaver Weohr, MBA student and chapter president.
The results
Overall, the chapter won seven First Place positions, 29 Top Five finishes and 32 State Top Ten finishes across categories including marketing, business law and ethics, accounting and economics.
Each of the 13 students below qualified for the National Leadership Conference which will be held online in late June. A detailed list of placements from MSU is posted below.
