For Missouri State University senior Anna Peterson, her academic trajectory has been shaped by a profound familial connection to the world of risk management and insurance.
Growing up among relatives working in various facets of the field, Peterson’s early exposure laid the foundation for her career aspirations.
Witnessing her family’s experiences as small business owners, including navigating the complexities of insurance, further fueled her interest in the area.
Her MSU experience
In May, Peterson will graduate summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in risk management and insurance.
Hailing from Kewaskum, Wisconsin, Peterson always knew she wanted to pursue a degree in risk management. Back in 2019, when she was searching for colleges, there were limited reputable programs for her degree choice. After some research, it became evident that MSU stood out as the ideal choice.
“MSU’s risk management program not only met but exceeded my expectations, making it the obvious frontrunner,” Peterson said.
“My interests evolved over time from risk management and insurance to other areas of finance and business as well, like financial markets, accounting and business management, “added Peterson about her academic journey at MSU.
Peterson’s contributions and achievements while at MSU have not gone unnoticed.
In 2023, she represented MSU at The Institutes Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriters (CPCU) Society’s annual meeting in Washington, D.C. CPCU educates, elevates and connects people in the disciplines of risk management and insurance.
Peterson also volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, which enabled her to give back to the community in a meaningful way.
“I was deeply honored to receive the Outstanding Graduating Senior in risk management and insurance award,” Peterson said.
She has many memorable moments at MSU, but one stands out for her.
“My most cherished memories are my experiences as a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority, where I cultivated lifelong friendships,” Peterson said.
A job secured
Looking ahead, Peterson is ready to make an impact in the business world. Armed with a diverse skill set honed through internships and academic endeavors, she will begin a promising career as a commercial underwriter with Acuity Insurance in Sheboygan, Wisconsin.
As a commercial underwriter, Peterson will undergo training to acquire knowledge across various commercial insurance lines.
She is confident her experiences at MSU have equipped her for the future. These include sharpening her leadership skills through participation in student organizations.
“Currently, I’m honored to serve as president of the local chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma at MSU,” Peterson said.
The collegiate professional fraternity promotes, encourages and sustains student interest in insurance, risk management and actuarial science as professions.

Emphasizing the evolving nature of the insurance industry and the many opportunities it presents, she underscores the importance for students to get involved in student-led organizations.
“Being in a student-led organization will not only help you grow as an individual. It will also give you the proper tools to communicate and develop relationships that will be pivotal in your career post-graduation,” Peterson said.
