Missouri State University students reached new heights at the 2024 Region 4 Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Student Management Competition, held from Oct. 20-23 in Nebraska City, Nebraska.
As the only school to place in every competition area, the construction management and interior design students showcased their skills and talents, setting a new standard in this prestigious event.
MSU sent six teams of six students to compete in this event. It brought together the region’s top construction management and design students for rigorous real-world challenges.
Thirty-three teams from eight universities across Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska and South Dakota competed this year.
Awards won
These were the results for MSU’s teams:
- Heavy/civil, first place (sponsored by Kiewit Construction): The team tackled a complex substation project, winning the distinctive drill rig trophy and a $1,000 prize.
- Commercial – CM @ Risk, second place (sponsored by McCownGordon Construction and Mortenson): The team worked on a hypothetical new middle school project in Kansas City, Kansas.
- Commercial – GC, second place (sponsored by Turner and Alberici): The team handled a challenging addition and renovation project for an existing fire station in Shawnee, Kansas.
- Specialty, second place (sponsored by Interstates Construction Services): The team impressed with their technical solutions for electrical systems on a massive pork processing plant project in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
- Design/build, third place (sponsored by Hensel-Phelps, Whiting-Turner and GE Johnson Construction Company): The team, which included both construction management and interior design students, stood out for its design and construction proposal of a new Military Museum in Platte City, Missouri.
Jeremiah Fincher, a specialty team member, said the competition was a huge eye-opener for him as an aspiring construction management professional.
“As a sophomore, I was challenged beyond my limits, but with the support of my experienced teammates, we placed second. For anyone ambitious enough to go beyond their limits, ASC is a must. I’m excited to work toward first place next year!” he added.
Participation in the Skills Summit
A group of MSU’s freshmen and sophomores also participated in the Skills Summit. This is a workshop for students with little to no experience in construction. It offers them an opportunity to learn and develop new skills.
The group contributed to the first, second and third place teams and sophomore Madison Wood earned the MVP for her leadership.
Dr. Richard Gebken, director of MSU’s School of Construction, Design and Project Management, praised the students for their success.
“They worked hard both before and during the competition to achieve these amazing results,” he said.
