Every day, cyber threats grow more sophisticated, putting everything from personal data to national security at risk. As such, preparing the next generation of experts to defend against those attacks is critical.

Missouri State University’s department of information technology and cybersecurity (ITC) is stepping up. Its BS in Information Technology (cybersecurity track) recently earned the National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense (CAE-CD) designation through 2030 from the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The recognition confirms the program meets the highest national standards and trains students with skills needed in today’s workforce, especially for federal cybersecurity jobs.

Meeting stringent standards

The designation process took more than a year and included two rounds of review. ITC’s faculty leaders documented course content, faculty qualifications and student activities to show the program met NSA and DHS requirements. The achievement was a collective effort of the cybersecurity faculty, guided by Dr. Xiang Guo, ITC department head; Dr. Joshua Davis, ITC professor; and Dr. Zhiguo Yang, ITC associate professor.

Benefits for students

For students, the designation ensures consistent core courses, hands-on labs and stronger access to scholarships, national recruiting events and federal career paths. It also opens exclusive NSA and DHS opportunities, including events and job postings available only to designated academic institutions.

“This recognition gives credibility to this degree,” said Yang. “Employers know our graduates have the right skills and education to succeed. That trust helps students stand out in the job market.”

Preparing graduates for high-demand careers

Missouri State’s IT program sets itself apart from IT programs at many other business schools through a strong emphasis on applied projects and technical training.

“We dive deeper in technical skills,” said Yang. “Our goal is to make sure students graduate with the skills employers want. That gives them an edge when they compete for jobs.”
