5 Ways to Care for the Planet

April 19, 2022 by Kylie J. Mignone

Earth Week is here! Take some time over the next few days to develop a habit that also supports the environment! Here are a few ideas to reduce your carbon footprint and practice sustainability while on campus:

  1. Stay hydrated with your reusable water bottle! Pack a water bottle in your bag and utilize the water bottle re-fill stations in academic building, dorms, and community spaces around campus.
  2. Soak up the sun by walking or biking to and around campus! The Foster Rec Center has shower and changing facilities for use that allow you to stay clean while you limit gas usage.
  3. Volunteer with the MSU Campus Garden! As the warm weather approaches, the Campus Garden team will need helping hands to tend to the plants that are grown using all-natural and environmentally friendly methods. The Campus Garden donates harvested produce to the Bear Pantry so getting involved support the planet along with fellow Bears who get to try the local fruits and vegetables.
  4. Clean out your fridge and pantry! To prevent food waste, go through your storage spaces and get creative in the kitchen by using food scraps to make a tasty meal. If you find any non-used items that you are not interested in, donate them to the Bear Pantry.
  5. Get plugged in and meet others who are also passionate about keeping our planet green! Consider minoring in sustainability or joining the sustainability commission, sustainability leadership program, or the green student alliance organization!

Dig in with fellow Bears. Take part in the Waste Audit.

September 8, 2021 by Alex Johnson

Missouri State’s Sustainability Strategic Plan aims to expand recycling across the campus, increase awareness of waste minimization programming, and divert more material from the landfill. These goals are possible with the support of students and staff like you. How so, you ask? This fall, you can join the Missouri State Sustainability team in digging into and sorting hundreds of pounds of campus waste on behalf of MSU’s 2021 Comprehensive Waste Characterization Study.

Serve with fellow Bears

The Missouri State community is invited to participate in a Waste Audit.  Material from 18 facilities across campus will be sorted into nearly 20 different categories, then be weighed and tracked accordingly.

This Waste Audit will be a critical piece of MSU’s Waste Characterization Study. The study aims to reveal MSU’s campus-wide waste composition, as well as opportunities for MSU to better rethink, redesign, reduce, reuse and recycle its waste. The forthcoming report will empower every Bear to support MSU’s Waste Minimization and Diversion commitments.

Join us in this valuable effort by volunteering! Daily shifts are open from Tuesday, September 28 to Wednesday, October 6. Sign up for any and all shifts in which you’d like to participate.

The Waste Audits, on behalf of the Waste Characterization Study, will be conducted under the guidance of The Illinois Sustainable Technology Center (ISTC), a unit of the Prairie Research Institute at the University of Illinois. ISTC has created a methodology for waste stream characterization and evaluation that provides campus-level performance measures and achievable recommendations for improvement.

MSU Campus Garden supports Bear Pantry with fresh produce

October 14, 2020 by Alex Johnson

The Bear Pantry and the MSU Campus Garden are working together to provide healthy food to the Missouri State University community.  As a key partner the Bear Pantry, MSU Campus Garden has provided more than 350 lbs of fresh produce.  Bear Pantry members can choose from a variety of produce from the garden through in-person shopping or online orders.

Garden managers and volunteers bring a freshly picked harvest to the Bear Pantry.

Serve. Educate. Grow.

The MSU Campus Garden is a student managed sustainability project made possible by the Sustainability Commission and Student Government Association. The project allows students to supplement their traditional education with hands on applications that also benefit the community.

The mission of the MSU Campus Garden is to serve as an all-natural educational resource for the University that provides fresh nutritional produce to fellow students and members of the campus and Springfield communities and to serve as an environmentally and socially sustainable resource for service learning on campus.
