Public Affairs Week (PAW) is an annual, week-long series of events and presentations developed by and for students as the kick-off for the 2015-2016 Public Affairs theme, Building Healthy Communities: Body, Mind, Spirit.

Last Day for 25% Credit/Refund Fall
September 19
The last day to change sections, drop, or withdraw from Fall 2015 First Block classes, with 25% refund, is today.
Drops and withdrawals can be processed online at My Missouri State. If you have a hold on your account preventing the use of the web registration system to drop a class, contact the Office of the Registrar prior to midnight on the deadline day. Office hours are 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. After 5:00 pm, email Registrar@missouristate.edu from your University email account, or fax 417-836-6334.
Course adds and section changes can only be processed with academic department approval.

Hispanic Heritage Month
Each year, American observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15-October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988 on the approval of Public Law 100-402. The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. Also Columbus Day or Dia de la Raza, which is October 12, falls withing this 30 day period.
Help Conserve Energy During Aug/Sept

The campus annual electrical demand rates will likely be set for the entire year sometime soon. The combination of students back for the fall semester and the extreme high temperatures will cause the electrical consumption to peak and therefore determine what electrical capacity City Utilities must plan for our campus throughout the entire year. This establishes the minimum we must pay through the next 10 months for the demand portion of the electric bills, regardless of the actual electricity we consume. Please join the campus community to step up and make a difference during the months of August and September by following these energy conserving measures to help set a low demand rate!

Citizen Scholar Award Nomination
The Board of Governors is once again soliciting nominations for the annual Citizen Scholars Award. Since the award was created in 2007, forty-seven exceptional students have been chosen to receive this prestigious honor, and the Missouri State University Board of Governors is expecting to recognize six more outstanding students this fall.
Faculty or Staff can nominate student who excels academically and exemplifies the Public Affairs mission. The deadline for nominations to be received is 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 17, 2015. Recipients of the Citizen Scholar Award are recognized at various times throughout the academic year, including at athletic events, on the House and Senate floors at the Capitol in Jefferson City, at Board of Governors’ functions, and at award banquets. Recipients will also be recognized on a plaque in the Parliamentary Room in the Plaster Student Union.

Public Affairs Week: New Voter Registration

To help emphasize the community engagement tenant of the public affairs mission, voter registration will be available at various times and locations on campus during Public Affairs Week. All qualifying students, staff and faculty are encouraged to get registered to vote!

Public Affairs Week: Civic Engagement Conference
September 17 at 9:00AM-3:30PM, PSU Ballroom
Join us for an informative and thought provoking look at the issues related to opportunity and democracy here in Springfield and in the United States. Topics that will be discussed include economic opportunity and social mobility; increasing diversity and its impact on communities; the state of political and civic participation; and the ways our community has come together to address public health needs. In an age where the influence of money on politics has grown exponentially and economic inequality is at record-high levels, this conference will explore democracy and self-governance.
Although there is no charge to attend any part of this Conference, including the luncheon, please register on the PAW website (http://publicaffairs.missouristate.edu/paw/conference.htm). This applies to students, faculty, staff and community members.
Dr. Jose Calderon is a Professor in Sociology and Chicano Studies at Pitzer College. He received his B. A. from the University of Colorado in Communications and his MA and PhD in Sociology from the University of California Los Angeles. As the son of immigrant farm workers from Mexico, he has had a long history of connecting his academic work with community organizing, student-based service learning, participatory action research, critical pedagogy, and multi-ethnic coalition building.
George Mehaffy is Vice President for Academic Leadership and Change at the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. His work focuses on civic engagement in higher education and leads such initiatives as the American Democracy Project.
Public Affairs Week: Carillon Bells Patriotic Recital

In honor of Constitution Day, join the campus community at 12:00 noon to hear a medley of time honored patriotic songs as performed by Dr. Jeremy Chesman – can you identify our national songs?
Jeremy Chesman, AAGO, ChM, University Carillonist and Assistant Professor of Music, is a graduate of the University of Michigan, where he was the first person to earn a Master of Music degree in Carillon Performance. His performances have been broadcast in the United States, the Netherlands, and Japan, and he has performed live throughout the United States, as well as in the Netherlands, France, Belgium, and Portugal, where he played a recital of American music at the National Palace in Mafra on the European Union’s day of mourning for the events of September 11.
A specialist in American music, Mr. Chesman has premiered works by Steven Sodders and Augustus O. Hill. He has also lectured on American carillon music in Belgium and at congresses of the Guild of Carilloneurs in North America. He is currently working on a book about the carillon in universities in America.
Public Affairs Week: Bridging the Diversity Gap

The sweeping forces of globalization present new challenges for higher education. There are a number of external pressures of globalization which demand transformation of university cultures to be more diverse and inclusive. Specifically, globalization has fostered an increasing emphasis on talent, creativity and innovation, regardless of the historic barriers of race and gender. The dramatic increases in diversity among student, faculty and staff populations coupled with the increasing demographic dominance of minority populations both at home and abroad represent a clear mandate for change. No institution of higher education can afford to waste human talent and the cultural and social richness that multicultural and other underrepresented groups bring to their campuses.
This interactive session will discuss the importance of diversity’s role in, ethical leadership, curriculum design, enhancing cultural competence, improving student success, increasing collaboration and respect across all groups, and building a rich campus environment using a “Reciprocal Empowerment” approach which empowers all to reach their full potential.
Dr. Edward E. Hubbard is President and CEO of Hubbard & Hubbard, Inc., Petaluma, CA, an international organization and human performance-consulting corporation that specializes in techniques for applied business performance improvement, Diversity Return on Investment (DROI®) measurement and analytics, instructional design and strategic organizational development. He is the author of more than 40 books.
Public Affairs Week: Building Healthy Communities Through Advocacy
September 15 at 2:00PM-4:00PM, Library Room 101
During this hands-on training, attendees will learn appropriate and effective strategies to influence change through advocacy to their local and state officials using letter writing, personal contact, social media and mediums. Sean Soendker Nicholson of Progress Missouri will be presenting the section on social media. Please bring your preferred digital device to practice on during the presentation. Students from the MSU Social Work Club will be presenting on the other topics. Due to the nature of this hands-on training event, please plan to attend the full two hours.

Public Affairs Week: MSU Talks

MSUTalks will explore this year’s public affair theme by proposing an answer to the question, “What defines a healthy community?” Arguments will be made that support biological and human health as the main determination of health; other arguments will be made in support of the claim that spiritual health is most important to community building; other arguments will be brought forth that the mind is always superior and the most important key to building healthy communities. Audience members will be allowed to make their own suggestions and interpretations of the positions and arguments that they hear. Everyone is welcome to join in to listen and/or to engage in this event where MSU talks!

Public Affairs Week: Civic Engagement Conference

Witness as those in the Western District of Missouri take their Oath of Allegiance and thereby complete the process of becoming a U.S. citizen. There will be a variety of speakers and MSU’s Hybernotes will be taking the stage with America the Beautiful! Seating will be limited in the theater on a first come first serve basis to about 200-300 students and/or campus members. Overflow seating will be available in the PSU Ballroom to view the ceremony via closed circuit.

Ozark Celebration Festival Lecture Series Presents Abby Burnett
September 14 at 7:00PM, PSU 313
Abby Burnett will present her lecture: Gone to the Grave: Burial Customs of the Arkansas Ozarks, 1850-1950, tonight at 7 p.m. in Plaster Student Union, Room 313.
Burnett is an independent researcher and writer in northwestern Arkansas who specializes in cemeteries and burial customs. An active member of the Association for Gravestone Studies and a regular contributor to its quarterly bulletin, she was featured in Silent Storytellers, a documentary produced by and aired on the Arkansas Educational Television Network in 2010.
In addition to her work on cemeteries, Burnett has published several articles on local and regional history and co-wrote the book When the Presbyterians Came to Kingston in 2000, a new edition of which is being released later this year. Her lecture will be based on her 2014 book, Gone to the Grave: Burial Customs of the Arkansas Ozarks, 1850-1950.

Ozarks Celebration Festival Series Presents Nancy Allen
September 17 at 7:00 PM, PSU Room 313
Nancy Allen will present her lecture: From Prosecutor to Author: How a Background in Criminal Law Inspired an Ozarks Mystery Series, tonight at 7 p.m. in Plaster Student Union 313.
Allen will discuss her professional background in criminal law and how it inspired her to write The Code of the Hills and A Killing at the Creek. She will also share a reading from one of her novels, and describe the path to publication.
Allen, a native of the Missouri Ozarks, received her Bachelor’s Degree in English from Missouri State; she entered law school and received her Juris Doctor from Missouri University School of Law.
As a practicing attorney for fifteen years, Allen served as Assistant Missouri Attorney General and as Assistant Prosecutor in Greene County. When she began her term as prosecutor in Greene County, she was the second woman in all of Southwest Missouri to serve in that capacity. In her years in prosecution she tried over thirty jury trials, including murder, rape, and incest. During that time she served on the Rape Crisis Board and the Child Protection Team of the Child Advocacy Council. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Victim Center.
Allen currently teaches Business Law in the College of Business at Missouri State University.

Mirosla Urbanik – Graphic Novel Art

Meyer Library is pleased to present the work of Miroslaw Urbaniak, graphic novel artist, during the month of September.
Enlarged prints of the works will be displayed in room 107 of Meyer Library.
Mr. Urbaniak did children book illustrations and multimedia designs, web pages and corporate identity as well as editorial illustration and poster designs and game UI designs. Out of these multiple fields and occupations, his favorite is storytelling. He does storyboards, graphic novels and comics.

Mr. Frank Warren presents PostSecret Live. Founder of PostSecret.com, a collection of highly personal secrets on artfully decorated postcards mailed anonymously from around the world, Frank Warren will discuss why the blog has become so important, and why he has made suicide awareness part of his life’s work. A popular speaker with college audiences, students will get to see postcards that were banned from his books and have the opportunity to share their own secrets live during the interactive program.

Freaky Fairbanks

The Drew Lewis Foundation at the Fairbanks, in partnership with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Springfield and Missouri State University, wants to freak you out with the 2nd Annual Freaky Fairbanks Haunted House!
Come and volunteer at the historic Fairbanks Elementary School over the course of two weekends: October 22-24 and 29-31, 2015. The hour from 7 to 8 pm will be kid-friendly for ages 12 and under. The 13 and up version will take place from 8-10 pm. To sign up, follow this link.

Victim Center
The Victim Center in Springfield, Missouri, is now accepting applications from community volunteers to assist victims of violent crime and their families.
Victim advocates are on call approximately two or three times a month, at nights or on weekends and holidays to respond to 864-SAFE hotline phone calls from crime victims or calls from local health-care and law enforcement agencies. Although most calls require only require a telephone response, advocates are also summoned to local hospitals, law enforcement agencies, and crime scenes to assist crime victims.
The next training is the first weekend of October. Interviews are underway now. Interviews and background checks on all applicants will be completed prior to acceptance. All applicants must be at least twenty-one years old and must have use of a car and a telephone.

A German themed two day event at the Ozarks Empire Fairgrounds (3001 N. Grant St. Springfield) featuring German food and beverages, a 5K run, contests, bike ride, kids rides, music and much, much more. The Oktoberfest supports Sertoma’s children’s charities.

Into the Streets
Into the Streets at Missouri State is the first large-scale service event of the semester! This annual program features community service opportunities for hundreds of students. Get out into our community and serve alongside local agencies!
Through this program, Missouri State students will be actively involved in one of our Public Affairs Pillars, Community Engagement. What is a better way to spend a Saturday than serving with friends, making new friends, volunteering, and making a difference in the lives of others?
Into the Streets is looking for Site Leaders who would lead a group of 5-20 students and would be available to attend a short training session prior to the event.
This day of service also needs students to sign up to volunteer. Students will meet in the PSU at 8 a.m. and then depart to different areas of the community to make a difference. The day should be done by 1 p.m.
