Asian Pacific American Heritage Month

May 1-31
May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month – a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. A rather broad term, Asian-Pacific encompasses all of the Asian continent and the Pacific Islands of Melanesia (New Guinea, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji and the Solomon Islands), Micronesia (Marianas, Guam, Wake Island, Palau, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Nauru and the Federated States of Micronesia) and Polynesia (New Zealand, Hawiian Islands, Rotuma, Midway Islands, Samoa, American Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Cook Islands, French Polynesia and Easter Island).

Like most commemorative months, Asian-Pacific Heritage Month originated in a congressional bill. In June 1977, Reps. Frank Horton of New York and Norman Y. Mineta of California introduced a House resolution that called upon the president to proclaim the first ten days of May as Asian-Pacific Heritage Week. The following month, senators Daniel Inouye and Spark Matsunaga introduced a similar bill in the Senate. Both were passed. On October 5, 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed a Joint Resolution designating the annual celebration. Twelve years later, President George H.W. Bush signed an extension making the week-ling celebration into a month-ling celebration. In 1992, the official designation of May as Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month was signed into law.

The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants.

Jewish American History Month

On April 20, 2006, President George W. Bush proclaimed that May would be Jewish American History Month to recognize the more than 350-year history of Jewish contributions to American culture.

Last Day 100% Credit/Refund, Summer Classes

May 18
The last day to change sections, drop, or withdraw from Summer 2015 Intersession classes, with 100% refund, is today.

Change of sections, drops, and withdrawals can be processed online at My Missouri State.  If you have a hold on your account preventing the use of the web registration system to drop a class, contact the Office of the Registrar prior to midnight on the deadline day.  Office hours are 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.  After 5:00 pm, email Registrar@missouristate.edu from your University email account, or fax 417-836-8776.

After this date, course adds and section changes can only be processed with academic department approval.

Haven

Haven is a required online course for all in-coming freshmen and transfer students to complete to initiate understanding of consent, sexual assault, relationship violence, and bystander intervention. If this course is not completed by the student prior to the student’s spring registration date within the student’s first year at Missouri State University, a Registration Hold will be placed on the student’s account. This hold will be lifted from the account once completion of Haven has occurred.

  1. Always sign in at: my.missouristate.edu
  2. After signing in, go under the Academics tab and find the New Student or Transfer Student section. Within this square, there is a training section and the Haven link is in this area. To access Haven, choose the link and you can begin.

Electronic Arts Student Showcase

Monday, May 11 at 7pm, PSU Theater
Please join us for the 16th annual EA Showcase on Monday, May 11.  The showcase will take place in the Plaster Student Union Theatre from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m. Seating starts at 6:30 p.m.

This year’s screening will feature an original short film, What Makes Us Human; an experimental narrative, Dead on Time, based on the album, Dead Man’s Bones; a documentary chronicling the formation of the DIY band, High Hoax; an interactive scavenger app for mobile devices called SEEK; and the futuristic video game, TAR.

This event is free and open to the public.  Parking available in Lot 24 (access off National Ave, one block south of Grand Street) or in the Park & Ride facility next to  Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts — take MSU Shuttle to the PSU theatre.

On May 16th, Join Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ozarks and local law enforcement at the 9th Annual Battle of the Badges presented by The Fraternal Order of the Eagles. Watch the Springfi­eld Police Department & Greene County Sheriff’s Office battle on the court! Come early for our brand new Kids FEST. Families can play, bounce and learn about family wellness and safety! Volunteers are needed to assist with guarding inflatables, helping out at registration, selling raffle tickets, or working at the concession booth. Tuesday, June 9
Calling all Bears: We want you to join Bear Crew! Help welcome new students and help them move into their residence hall rooms this Fall.  Move-In Days will be August 13-15, 2015.

Volunteers will interact with students from all over the world to improve their English!

The Benefits of participating in Bear Crew

  •          All volunteers receive a T-shirt for working two shifts.
  •          Volunteers without a meal plan will be given a meal voucher for use in one of the dining centers after they complete their shift(s).
  •          Volunteers will be allowed to distribute organization information on standard-sized business cards while they are helping students move in.
  •          Volunteer hours will be tracked and submitted to OSE and Fraternity & Sorority Life for verification.
  •          Students who live in the residence halls will be able to move in a day early.

 Girls on the Run of Southwest Missouri

Saturday, May 9
Girls on the Run inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experiencee-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. Meeting twice a week in small teams of 8-20 girls, the program teaches life skills through fun, engaging lessons that celebrate the joy of movement. The 20-lesson curriculum is taught by certified Girls on the Run® coaches and includes three parts: understanding ourselves, valuing relationships and teamwork and understanding how we connect with and shape the world at large. Over the course of the program, girls will develop and improve competence, feel confidence in who they are, develop strength of character, respond to others and oneself with care and compassion, create positive connections with peers and adults, and make a meaningful contribution to community and society. Each team creates and executes a local community service project. At each season’s conclusion, the girls and their running buddies complete a 5k running event.
We are currently seeking volunteers for our spring program culminating celebratory 5k fun run on May 9th. To sign up, click here.

Cinco de Mayo

May 5
Cinco de Mayo – or the fifth of May – commemorates the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867). A relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations. Cinco de Mayo traditions include parades, mariachi music performances and street festivals in cities and towns across Mexico and the United States.

Great Circle is an agency that provides a unique spectrum of behavioral health services to children and families.  With specialized programs and highly-trained professionals, they provide hope to those in difficult circumstances throughout Missouri and beyond.

Currently, Great Circle is seeking volunteers for the following events:

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday – no classes/offices closed.

Civil Rights leader, Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. , gained national prominence during the Montgomery, Alabama, bus boycott of 1955-1956 and soon becamse the acknowledged national leader of the growing movement to obtain civil rights for African Americans. His commitment to nonviolence, his courage, and the moral power of his vision, eloquently expressed in masterful oratory and writings, won him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. Toward the end of his life, King became convinced of the interrelatedness of all forms of social, economic, and military oppression and broadened the sphere of his activism. He spoke out against U.S. involvement in the war in Vietnam and was preparing to lead a massive Poor People’s March on Washington when he was assassinated in Memphis on April 14, 1968 while helping to organize the city’s sanitation workers. Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday is observed nationally on the third Monday in January.

Haven

Haven is a required online course for all in-coming freshmen and transfer students to complete to initiate understanding of consent, sexual assault, relationship violence, and bystander intervention. If this course is not completed by the student prior to the student’s spring registration date within the student’s first year at Missouri State University, a Registration Hold will be placed on the student’s account. This hold will be lifted from the account once completion of Haven has occurred.

  1. Always sign in at: my.missouristate.edu
  2. After signing in, go under the Academics tab and find the New Student or Transfer Student section. Within this square, there is a training section and the Haven link is in this area. To access Haven, choose the link and you can begin.

Lecture: Laverne Cox: Moving Beyond Gender Expectations

Tuesday, January 20 at 7pm, Juanita K. Hammons Hall
Laverne Cox is a critically acclaimed actress who currently appears in the Netflix original series Orange is the New Black, playing the groundbreaking role of “Sophia Burset,” an incarcerated African American transgender woman. Laverne is the first trans woman of color to have a leading role on a mainstream scripted television show. Time named Sophia Burset the 4th most influential fictional character of 2013.   She transgender advocate who is passionate about telling stories that reflect the transgender experience and the history of nonfiction transgender representation in mainstream media, and learn Cox’s unique story of overcoming challenges to pursue an acting career.

The ROTC Department is offering a new online Military Leadership class for this next semester. MIL102WD-Mil212WD: Combined SP15

This is an opportunity for students to identify not only the necessary skills to become a leader but also be introduced to a values based organization that values leadership. This class will focus on Critical thinking and an introduction to the United States Army.  Students will be given the optional chance to participate in ROTC Labs.

For those students interested in joining the military this class will give you the basic knowledge needed for your future profession and position as a 2nd lieutenant in the United State Army, Army National Guard or Army Reserve. This class will also count toward the required classes needed to advance towards a commission as an officer.

For those who understand the importance of leadership but do not want to be part of the military, that’s great! This class will help develop your understanding of roles and responsibilities in support of a team, understand the concept of professionalism, and helps define the problem solving process in the military and non military problems. This class will help you demonstrate an introductory level of writing and speaking proficiency and basic negotiation strategies required for effective leadership. Leadership is a key component in what fortune 500 companies are looking for in its new hires.

This is a rare opportunity that no other ROTC program in the nation is offering, an opportunity that allows a student to learn leadership at their own pace with a dedicated mentor to guide through the process.

MLK Day of Service

How can I participate?

In order to participate you must be a current student.  You simply need to sign up. It is first come first serve.

What types of projects will be completed?

Students will learn of their service project the morning of the event.  Prior to the service day, participants will be notified of information that is crucial to the project (such as wear clothes that can get muddy or paint on them).  On the registration form, please be sure to indicate what type of projects you would want to participate in, so we can best place you.  A trained site leader will accompany the group to the service site.

When will this take place?

Participants will arrive at the Plaster Student Union at 8:15a.m. on January 19th.  There will be a brief opening orientation followed by receiving the service project for the day.  Participants will have until around 2:00pm to complete their service project.

  • Would you like to learn how to salsa or swing?  Register for our East Coast Swing Class or Salsa Session by January 14th to secure your spot! 5 week session.  January 15-February 12. Thursdays, Swing at 6:30PM, Salsa at 7:30PM. $40 for members, $50 for nonmembers.  No partner needed.
  • Face your Fear with this year’s Swim Lessons.  We will offer three levels of swim lessons this spring.  Fear of Water Lessons – Monday and Wednesday, 5:30-6PM.  Beginner Swimming Lessons – Monday and Wednesday, 6:15-6:45PM.  Intermediate Swimming Lessons – Monday and Wednesday, 7-7:30PM.  Classes run from February 2-March 4 (no class on 2/16).  $40 for members, $50 for nonmembers.
