Site preparations began today for a new Southern Highbush Blueberry research project coming in the Spring

This plot is being prepared for a new research project that will receive grant funding from the Missouri Department of Agriculture Specialty Crop Block Grant program. This project will evaluate the viability of Southern Highbush Blueberry as an option for growers in Southwest Missouri. Climbing okra anyone?

Dr. Maciej Pszczolkowski tasted the climbing okra, but is not quite sure if he likes it

We planted some climbing okra in the high tunnel this year. The seeds were given to us by Gene Campbell last year. Climbing okra isn't a real okra but is a member of the cucumber-gourd-pumpkin family or Cucurbita. Gourd Update

The gourds that were planted at the beginning of July are growing well. Cultivars planted include: Tennessee Dancing Gourd, Birdhouse Gourd, Big Apple Gourd, Mayo Bule Gourd, Bushel Basket Gourd, and Zucca Giant Gourd.  Blue Hubbard Squash was planted at the ends of each row as a trap crop.  All gourd and squash seeds were purchased at Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds. Drip … [Read more...] about Gourd Update

Mushrooms growing well in shroom room

Bob looked at the cremini mushrooms and estimated the first harvest to be early next week.

Bob Semyck of Willow Mountain Mushrooms http://www.willowmountainmushrooms.com/ dropped off the second group of mushroom kits and looked at the growth of the first ones he dropped off last Wednesday. Gourds Planted

The gourds were planted in the field today. Panels were installed for the smaller gourds to grow over and the larger gourds were planted in the ground. Blue Hubbard Squash was planted at the end of each row as a trap crop.  The varieties planted are:  Tennessee Dancing, Bird House, Big Apple, Mayo Bule, Zucca and Bushel Basket.
