Mercy Clinic Billing Changes and Hospital Outpatient Department Transitions

June 2, 2025 by Deidre Mings

Update:

Thank you to everyone who has reached out with questions about recent changes related to Mercy clinic billing. We appreciate your engagement and are committed to keeping you informed.

What’s Changing?

Mercy has updated the billing classification for some specialty clinics, shifting certain services—such as endocrinology—from a traditional clinic setting to a Hospital Outpatient Department (HOD) model. This change means services are now billed under the outpatient hospital category, which may result in different out-of-pocket costs than employees have experienced in the past.

We have confirmed with Mercy that all current patients of clinics transitioning to HOD status receive notification by letter.

The following clinics have already transitioned:

  • Endocrinology

  • Cardiovascular

The following clinics are scheduled to transition:

  • Ophthalmology – Go-live: June 9

  • Headache – Go-live: June 9

  • Urology – Go-live: June 23

What Hasn’t Changed?

There have been no changes to the university’s medical insurance plan design. Services billed as outpatient hospital visits have always been subject to the deductible and coinsurance. However, if office visits were billed from these locations previously, as a clinic-level visit, they were subject to a fixed specialty copay versus deductible and coinsurance.
