April 7, 2026 by Deidre Mings

🩺  What You Should Know

Early detection saves lives, and the Multi-Cancer Early Detection (MCED) test is a new blood test that helps identify cancer signals before symptoms appear.

🔬 What Is the MCED Test?

The MCED test is a blood-based screening tool that detects signals in your bloodstream linked to cancer.

Highlights:

✅ Can often pinpoint where the cancer signal is originating

✅ Helps your care team plan diagnostic testing or next steps

✅ Designed to **complement—not replace—**routine screenings like mammograms, colonoscopies, and others

👥 Who Should Consider This Test?

The MCED test is generally recommended for individuals with elevated cancer risk, such as:

  • Adults age 50 or older
  • Individuals with other risk factors identified by a healthcare provider

⚠️ Tip: Always consult your healthcare provider to see if this test fits your personal health situation.

📝 How the Process Works

Step 1: Request the Test

  • Visit mercy.net/EarlyDiagnosis to check eligibility

Step 2: Schedule a Lab Visit

  • Eligible participants provide a simple blood sample at a Mercy lab

Step 3: Receive Results

  • Results typically arrive within two weeks
  • Includes a clinical action plan from your care team if needed

💰 Cost and Payment Options

The MCED test currently costs $949 and is not covered by health insurance.

Flexible Spending Account (FSA) / Asiflex:

  • You may be able to use FSA funds to cover the test
  • Enrollment in FSA is only available within 31 days of a qualifying event or during open enrollment
  • Eligible expenses are listed here: Asiflex Eligible Expenses

🏥 Critical Illness Insurance & Wellness Benefit

Missouri State offers a Critical Illness insurance policy to eligible employees. This policy provides a lump-sum benefit if you are diagnosed with a covered critical illness, such as invasive cancer.

Wellness Benefit:

  • Current enrollees can submit a wellness claim form for eligible preventive screenings, including cancer detection tests like the MCED test
  • Form and details here: CI Wellness Benefit Claim Form
  • Learn more about the policy: Missouri State Critical Illness Coverage

🔗 Layered Approach to Screening

Preventive health works best when layered:

  • 🥼 Colonoscopies: Life-Saving Screening Reminder
  • 🧬 MCED Test: Detects other potential cancers via a simple blood sample

Combining routine screenings with advanced tools like the MCED test provides a comprehensive approach to preventive care.

🩺 Talk With Your Provider

Before scheduling any new screening, including the MCED test:

  • Discuss your health history and risk factors
  • Work with your provider to choose the most appropriate screenings
  • Combine routine tests with newer detection tools for the most effective preventive care
