The importance of security

April 28, 2023 by Ian Alaimo

As many might be aware Truman State was hit by a major ransomware attach about a week ago. This cyberattack focused on gaining access to their network and then encrypting user data and asking for a ransom to decrypt it. Historically, even if the ransom is paid, the data is never recovered. The impact was huge as it appears they still used lots of local file servers for data storage.

This is just a reminder of why security is so important, although it sometimes might be a hassle. Using SharePoint and OneDrive helps defend against these kinds of attacks as Microsoft has built-in malware detection for these cloud-based storage areas. Also, our multifactor authentication help protect us and our phishing simulations help us recognize these kinds of threats.

Reach out to MCHHS IT with any questions about IT security.

Microsoft 365 web portal – down

April 20, 2023 by Ian Alaimo

The web portal for 365 is down for many across the country. It’s not a university issue.

You can usually still log on, but the apps are missing and not available. Sometimes logging out and then logging back in will allow you to get to the apps but it doesn’t seem to work for everyone.

The local versions of the 365 still seem to function fine.

We’ll update when more information becomes available..

Microsoft 365 – Bookings with me – now available

April 18, 2023 by Ian Alaimo

Microsoft Bookings with me is now available in preview mode. You can access it by going to the web version of your email (my.missouristate.edu or portal.office.com). It allows you to post a page with your available meeting times that people can schedule.  It basically does what YouCanBookMe and Calendly do and is already covered by our 365 license so no cost to the user. Here is some documentation on it and reach out if you need help setting it up or have questions.  Bookings with me: setup and sharing – Microsoft Support

Multiple desktop workspaces in Windows 11

April 11, 2023 by Ian Alaimo

A little-known feature is that Windows 11 supports multiple desktops to help you organize your open apps into different workspaces. Click the circled button below that’s usually by the search bar to add desktops. Once you have multiple desktops open you can quickly switch between them by using the CTRL +Windows Key and left/right keys. Windows 10 also has this feature but it’s a little harder to get to., so a good reason to upgrade to 11.
