The Department of Theatre and Dance announces its last program for the 2025-26 season. “Pillars,” the Spring Dance Concert, will be performed April 23-26 at the John Goodman Amphitheatre (JGA).

Show times are 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $16 for adults and $13 for students/seniors. Special advance rates are available for students with a Missouri State ID.

Assistant Professor of Dance Jessica Madden coordinated this year’s production.

Concert features variety of dance styles

Madden is excited that the “Pillars” concert marks the first time a fully produced dance concert will be performed on the JGA stage.

“This is the first dance concert I am coordinating at Missouri State since joining the faculty this fall,” Madden said.

Thirty-seven students are scheduled to appear in the program. Works by three graduating seniors, Caroline Wolfe, Peyton Nicholson, and Nicole Mayer, will be featured. Guest artist Halle Lawson, a recent graduate of the dance program, has also choreographed a special dance piece.

In addition, Madden collaborated with five of the students to present her new work, “Intrepid.”

Audiences can expect to see variety of dance styles performed, including “contemporary, tap, house, jazz, hip hop, majorette and step,” Madden said.

“It has been a very rewarding experience working with these incredibly talented students,” she said.

Interpreting the public affairs mission

In addition to the season’s “Awakenings” theme, the dance concert’s “Pillars” theme gives students a chance to explore Missouri State’s public affairs mission.

“Each of the choreographers have their own take on how they are engaging with these pillars in their work,” Madden said. “There is a significant emphasis on community in many of the pieces, and a call to ‘awaken’ these principles in how we engage with the world today.”

Accounting, Biology, Math…and the Arts?

April 10, 2026 by Lynn M. Lansdown

The Judith Enyeart Reynolds College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities, or “RCASH,” offers students a variety of academic studies and professional opportunities. Art, theatre, dance, music, communication, history, sociology, languages, criminology and political science are just some of RCASH’s programs.

Opportunities are indeed abundant. Just ask Veronika Yerina, Rocky Lane and Caroline Wolfe.

Yerina, Lane and Wolfe are all pursuing non-RCASH degrees. Yerina, a junior, is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in biology. Lane will graduate this spring with a Bachelor of Science in accounting. Wolfe will graduate this spring with a Bachelor of Science in applied mathematics and will continue her studies through Missouri State’s accelerated master’s program.

Yet these students are also supplementing their degrees with arts-intensive programs and courses. For each of them, there are no contradictions. Studying the arts has improved their professional prospects. They also believe it has made them better humans.

The Department of Music is excited to announce a concert coordinated by Missouri State University’s Choral Union, Symphony Orchestra and dance students from the Department of Theatre and Dance.

Featuring Johannes Brahms’ “Liebeslieder Walzer, Op. 52,” the collaborative effort is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Dec. 4 in the Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts. It is free and open to the public.

Before and after the concert, members of Mu Phi, Missouri State’s music fraternity, will be on hand to collect canned good donations.

“Universally adored” music

Brahms originally composed the waltzes for choir and piano four hands, explained Associate Director of Choral Studies Dr. Erin Plisco. Later, however, he transcribed several of the movements for choir and orchestra.

“Brahms is accessible for both choir and orchestra, and the music is charming and universally adored,” she said.

Plisco and Missouri State’s Orchestra Director, Dr. Yi-Ping Chen, will share conducting duties for the Liebeslieder. In addition, some of the music department’s graduate conducting students will conduct a few of the movements.

Meanwhile, Assistant Professor Dr. Perry Mears and Artist-in-Residence Parker Payne will perform the movements written for just piano and choir.

The concert will also feature additional selections from the orchestra and choir performing separately, Plisco said.

2025 Fall Dance Concert truly “Immersive”

October 27, 2025 by Lynn M. Lansdown

Missouri State University’s Department of Theatre and Dance presents a unique take on the dance experience with its 2025 Fall Dance Concert.

The production will be performed entirely outdoors.

Show times are 7:30 p.m. Nov. 6-8, with a matinee performance at 2:30 p.m. Nov. 9, all at the John Goodman Amphitheatre.

Associate Professor of Dance Azaria Hogans coordinated this year’s concert, which is free and open to the public. No tickets are required.

Outdoor performances immerse audience in dance

For this year’s concert, Hogans adopted an unusual format.

“This year’s concert is very unique,” she said. “Many of the dances will be site specific, and we will tour the audience to a couple of nearby locations to view some of the dances. We will also have a couple of dance films projected. The audience will be truly immersed in this concert.”

Each performance of “Immersion” will start at the John Goodman Amphitheatre (JGA). From there, it will continue to various areas around JGA. Nearly 40 students will perform in the concert.

Warm clothes, comfortable shoes and hot chocolate

Hogans said the “Immersion” concept blends well with the season’s “Awakening” theme because dance itself is an awakening experience.

“The body is powerful in awakening oneself to inner thoughts as well as being able to experience the stories of others: awakening empathy, new ways of thinking and reflection,” Hogans explained.

To counter any potential cool weather, Hogans said patrons should wear warm clothes and comfortable shoes. The Mo State Dance Co, a student organization, will also be on hand selling hot chocolate as a fundraiser “and to keep everyone cozy,” she added. Another student organization, Maroon Dynasty, will also be selling glow sticks and hand warmers.
