January 19, 2010 by

Senators:

The fabulous Courtney Wendel has uploaded an informal copy of the proposed changes to the Elections Manual to the DMS. Please be advised that this is not a final Draft of the Manual, but an opportunity for you to review and become familiar with the changes the Elections Commission has proposed. We will be voting on the manual during our Tuesday, January 26th meeting. Please be sure to print out/review the formal copy of the Elections Manual before next Tuesday’s meeting – you’ll be glad you did! 🙂

Thank you!

Bears Backing Haiti: 50 in 50

January 19, 2010 by

Fellow Students,

Recognizing our duty to provide compassion and support, student leaders of Missouri State have established Bears Backing Haiti: 50 in 50, a relief campaign aimed at  raising 50,000 dollars in 50 hours to aid Springfield-based Convoy of Hope in their relief efforts.

The campaign will begin 6:00 pm tonight and continue through 8:00 pm on Thursday, January 21st in front of the Plaster Student Union and around campus. Volunteers with buckets will be available during the 50 hours; additionally, donations can be dropped off at Commerce Bank in the Plaster Student Union.

The campaign will conclude at 8:15 p.m. Thursday evening with a Candle Light Vigil and presentation of a check to Convoy of Hope at the Bear Paw.

Students of Missouri State have often set the standard when responding to tragedies whether it be a hurricane hitting the Gulf Coast or an earthquake devastating a small island-nation. Showing your support for the people of Haiti can be as simple as telling a friend of the campaign or foregoing your morning coffee and donating to the cause. To volunteer for the campaign call the Office of Student Engagement at 836-4386.  I hope that you will join me in this endeavor and keep the victims and their families in your thoughts. Together we can bring to the people of Haiti the friendship and hope that is required of the common humanity we share.

Respectfully,

-Christopher W. Polley

SGA Looks to Continue Success of Fall Semester

January 17, 2010 by

The Student Government Association maintained strong numbers during the fall semester of the 2009-2010 Senate Session, including 114 senators representing 53 organizations and class seats. During the fall semester, Senators addressed issues such as plus/minus grading, campus signage, and net neutrality. The Senate also passed resolutions which will commission a few projects such as the publication of a school yearbook, display of student artwork in dining centers, and create a public affairs distinction for students.

“Our Senators feel better trained and more comfortable which has encouraged them to play a more active role in SGA,” Kristen Sanocki, Vice President of the Student Body, explained, “We are excited for the upcoming semester and hope to bring many projects into fruition.”

As the spring semester began, over ninety Senators were registered as returning which provided for strong committees. During the upcoming semester, Senators will work on projects ranging from the iGrade system, the 2010 Census, and a textbook rental program.  Below are the committee numbers as of January 12th.
