SGA Asks Professors to Make Syllabi Available in Advance

October 30, 2011 by Paige Oxendine

Missouri State’s Student Government Association unanimously approved a resolution on October 26, 2011 asking professors to make course syllabi available to students prior to course registration.

The resolution, which will be given to Faculty Senate for consideration, emphasizes the role that syllabi play in students having a full understanding of a course. The resolution also highlights the benefits of students being able to view a course’s syllabus before registering for the class.

The Student Government Association has created a list of items they feel instructors ought to include on all syllabi, with the understanding that the syllabi made available prior to registration may not be completely finalized.

Student Government Association Commends Dr. A. Leslie Anderson

October 22, 2011 by Paige Oxendine

Missouri State University’s Student Government Association recently moved to unanimously approve a resolution commending the work of Dr. A. Leslie Anderson, Associate Professor and former Interim Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion.

Aside from working as an Associate Professor in the Department of Counseling, Leadership, and Special Education, Dr. Anderson has also served on the President’s Commission for Diversity since 2005. Dr. Anderson co-chaired the Commission from 2007 to 2008 and served as chair of the Commission from 2008 to 2010.

In 2010 Missouri State University’s Board of Governors identified the goal of “promoting diversity through ‘Inclusive Excellence’ across the institution.” The Board then created the chief diversity officer position and appointed Dr. Anderson as Interim Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion.

The Student Government Association would like to commend Dr. Anderson’s work as Interim Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion, including her efforts to promote inclusive excellence while serving on the Long-Range Strategic Planning Committee.

Dr. Anderson relinquished her duties as Interim Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion on October 3, 2011 to Dr. Kenneth Coopwood, and will return as a full time faculty member on January 1, 2012

Civility Project Adopted on Campus

October 3, 2011 by Paige Oxendine

The Student Government Association of Missouri State University recently moved to support The Community Foundation of the Ozarks’ Good Community Committee by adopting a resolution that promotes the Foundation’s Civility Project on campus. The project is founded on 10 tenets of civility, which focus on issues such as attentiveness, inclusiveness, respect, compassion, and accountability.

Recognizing that public discourse is a cornerstone of democracy, the Springfield-Greene County Civility Project was launched on April 13, 2011 and aims to increase civic engagement and foster a welcoming and respectful environment for all opinions.

On September 27, 2011 Student Government Association passed GB Fall 2011-03, which supports the Springfield-Greene County Civility Project and the inclusion of its 10 tenets across campus. SGA is encouraging all student organizations and student leaders to incorporate the tenets into their actions and dialogue.

For a complete list of the Springfield-Greene County Civility Project’s 10 tenets, please see: http://sga.missouristate.edu/documents/ and “Support of the Springfield-Greene County Civility Project.”
