Curtis P. Lawrence Excellence in Advising Award Recipients Announced
Dr. Rhonda Stanton, Azaria Hogans, and Karmen Brewer will be recognized as the recipients of the 2025 Curtis P. Lawrence Excellence in Advising Awards at the Kathy J. Davis Master Advisor Reception on March 10, 2025, from 4-5 p.m. in the Ballroom East in Plaster Student Union. Each will be presented with a plaque and a $1500 award.
Stanton is an associate professor and professional and technical writing program director in the English department.
Hogans is an assistant professor and BFA & BS coordinator in the theatre and dance department.
Brewer serves as a Senior Academic Advisor in the Business Advisement Center.
Each year, this award is presented to one undergraduate faculty advisor, one undergraduate staff advisor, and graduate advisor. The recipients of this award have demonstrated excellent advising to Missouri State students. Advisors are nominated by students, faculty, and staff. All nominees are given a chance to submit an application packet. A committee of past award recipients review and select the winners.

The Indicators of Timely Completers
“Colleges and universities have invested in their retention strategies to improve students’ completion and the cost of education by helping them complete a degree in a timely manner. Recent data from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center found that academic outcomes in the first year and first – to second-year persistence were significant indicators of a student’s likelihood of completing a degree and doing so expeditiously.” Ashley Mowreader shares these findings in an Inside Higher Ed article.

“Core42 & You: The Re-Do”
It’s been a while since CORE 42 has been discussed, so it’s time for a refresher! This advisor forum will cover the basics of CORE 42, what’s new with CORE 42, and frequently asked questions. Attendees will learn about eligibility requirements for CORE 42, reevaluations within CORE 42 and general education, and resources for those who advise CORE 42 students. In short, there will be information for those who are new to CORE 42 and those who have worked with CORE 42 since its inception. This forum will be held on Thursday, March 13 from 12:00PM – 1:00PM in PSU313. Registration is encouraged.
