Welcome to the first issue of the Transfer Advocate. The Transfer Advocate is a newsletter published by the Academic Advising and Transfer Center as a resource for the Transfer Advising community at Missouri State University. The newsletter was created to support professional development and inform staff and faculty about news related to transfer students both at Missouri State and as a whole.

Sherman-Wilkins and Johnson Awarded NACADA Advising Awards
Dr. Kyler Sherman-Wilkins, Assistant Professor of Sociology and Anthropology, and David Johnson, Academic Advisor and Retention Specialist in the McQueary College of Health and Human Services, have been awarded Certificates of Merit of the Outstanding Advising Awards. Both were nominated after receiving the 2021 Curtis P. Lawrence Excellence in Advising Awards.

Inside Higher Ed, Tackling Transfer
Wendy Kilgore, Director of Research for the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO) writes, “Higher education leaders need to understand the barriers and enablers of the transfer student experience, then do the work to create an environment aimed at giving credit where credit is due.”

Review the Updated Missouri State Transfer Website
The updated Transfer website includes sections with information on steps to becoming a bear, transfer 2+2 plans, and additional resources for transfer students and advisors.
Transfer Advising Committee
The Transfer Advising Committee works in cooperation with Transfer Council and the Provost’s Academic Advising Council to develop best practices for transfer advising, facilitate communication regarding transfer student issues, and offer professional development for transfer advisors.
