Missouri State University’s Board of Governors has honored three faculty members and two staff members for putting the university’s public affairs mission into practice.
They received the Board of Governors’ Award for Excellence in Public Affairs. This annual recognition celebrates faculty and staff who embody the spirit of the public affairs mission through their personal on-campus work.
Each winner receives $1,500 for research, professional development or projects related to their public affairs efforts.
Faculty winners
Dr. David Cornelison, professor of physics, astronomy and materials science in the College of Natural and Applied Sciences
Cornelison brings the world of science alive to all students.
His passion for physics and commitment to students and the community extend beyond the university.
Whether co-creating the traveling demonstration van called “Phys Biz,” organizing Seuss Science Day or hosting the STEM-based KSMU radio show that covers science topics, Cornelison makes science accessible to everyone.
Dr. Alan Tinkler, assistant department head for the english department in the Reynolds College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities
Tinkler bridges the gap between students and the community.
In 2003, Tinkler launched the Springfield Way Internship Program, fostering student collaboration with organizations like the Drew Lewis Foundation, Community Partnership of the Ozarks, The Kitchen and United Way.
In all aspects, Tinkler models what it means to be an engaged citizen.
Dr. Rebecca Woodard, professor of kinesiology in the McQueary College of Health and Human Services
Woodard’s career is rooted in preparing students to effectively and ethically provide physical education and exercise to individuals with disabilities regardless of age, ability or special needs.
Her commitment to this mission is exemplified through various initiatives like The Arc of the Ozarks, Bear POWER and the Springfield Public Schools Adapted Physical Education program.
Her continued work shows the importance of accessibility and inclusivity in physical education.
Staff winners
Jennifer Johnston, director of Teacher Training Programs for the English Language Institute
Johnston fosters a rich environment of cross-cultural understanding.
Her work extends beyond the campus through initiatives like The Family Welcome Program, where she collaborates with refugees.
Her commitment to inclusivity and community shows through her work and impacts the university community.
Juli Panza, director of Professional Education Services in the College of Education
Panza is dedicated to promoting dialogue and collaboration on issues related to equity and social justice among students and academic advisors.
Her work exemplifies the importance of cultural competence, community engagement and ethical leadership.
Through her commitment to inclusivity, she continues to impact our campus community.
