Our new 3D printer is up and running at last and will be available for students very soon! Earlier this week, Centralized User Support Specialist Tim Ewy tested it out. Here is the result:
So how does it work? The MakerBot takes a plastic filament called PLA (polylactic acid) and heats it to 230° Celsius. (That’s over twice the boiling point of water… youch!) Then, the printer essentially draws with the melted plastic one layer at a time. The shield Tim printed has about 80 layers.
It would cost approximately $2.60 to create an object this size with this material. Prices will be determined per gram of material used plus $1 for maintenance. Several colors will be available, and some materials are more expensive than others. Once it becomes available to use, anyone who wants to print with the MakerBot or the wide-format printer will need to purchase BearPrint Premium cards.
Can’t wait? Neither can we. As Tim said, “We’re excited to see what students will come up with!”
