African American Heritage Month
Black History Month, or National African American History Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history. The event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating black history.

LOGOS: Call for Submissions
LOGOS: A Journal of Undergraduate Research will accept submissions from all fields until 11:59 pm on February 15. To be eligible for publication, a submission must have been made for an undergraduate course at Missouri State University or an affiliated campus.
LOGOS is dedicated to publishing outstanding work by undergraduates in every
academic discipline, including original research, essays, creative writing, and artwork. Led by Missouri State’s Faculty Advisory Board and Honors College student editors, LOGOS conforms to the highest standards of scholastic integrity in a blind peer-review process.

The Sustainability@MSU newsletter lets students, faculty, staff and community members stay up-to-date on what is happening on campus related to sustainability. The newsletter includes exciting announcements, updates on current programs and upcoming events as well as resources for how to live more sustainability.
Haven is a required online course for all in-coming freshmen and transfer students to complete to initiate understanding of consent, sexual assault, relationship violence, and bystander intervention. If this course is not completed by the student prior to the student’s spring registration date within the student’s first year at Missouri State University, a Registration Hold will be placed on the student’s account. This hold will be lifted from the account once completion of Haven has occurred.

Exhibit will be open during Springfield First Friday Art Walk February 5, until 10pm.
Galleries are closed national and university holidays.
Russian born Victoria Goro-Rapoport originally trained as a set designer, working with various puppet and drama theaters before emigrating from Russia in 1990. She discovered etching while living in Israel from 1990-1994. She went on to earn her MFA in set design from the University of Utah in 1998, and her MFA in printmaking from the University of Illinois in 2002. Goro-Rapoport is currently Professor of Drawing and Printmaking at the University of Nebraska, Kearney. Her work explores the precarious connection between human-made spaces and the humans who inhabit

February 1, Foster Recreation Center
A month long event which promotes and engages healthy, multidimensional wellness options offered by Campus Recreation for Foster Recreation Center student, staff and faculty members. Many prizes are available throughout the program. A one-time fee of $5 is required, but that will give the participant a level one punch card, a drawstring bag, a Frisbee, and a coozie. After completing the level one punch card they can turn that in for a free level two punch card and blender bottle. After completing that, they can turn it in for a level three punch card and either chapstick or a paracord bracelet. Finally, after completing that punch card they can turn it in for a phone arm band. All completed punch cards will also be entered in a drawing to win even bigger prizes!!

Geography, Geology and Planning Seminar

Sedimentary Records of Human-Induced Landscape Change since the Neolithic in the Western Pyrenees Mountains of France
David Leigh is a professor of Geography and the Director of the Geomorphology Laboratory at the University of Georgia, where he is an associate member of the Centers for Archaeological Sciences, Latina American and Caribbean Studies, and the River Basin Center. He teaches geomorphology classes on all levels (freshman to graduate-level). His research focuses on geomorphic and stratigraphic records of environmental change during the late Quaternary period (past 130,000 years) with complementary emphasis on geoarchaeology. His main interests involve fluvial, eolian, and soil systems. Dr. Leigh is a Fulbright Scholar (2009 award for study in Uruguay and Argentina). Also, he received the 2008 G.K. Gilbert Award for Excellence in Geomorphic Research from the Association of American Geographers. He currently conducts research in the Mixteca highlands of south-central Mexico, the Pyrenees Mountains of southern France, and the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, where he examines geomorphic expression of natural and human-induced environmental change. David enjoys the outdoors, including gardening, hunting, fishing, hiking, and of course field work in geomorphology. Dr. Leigh has the following degrees: B.A., University of Colorado, Geography, 1982; M.S., University of Wisconsin-Madison, Geography, 1988; and Ph.D., University of Wisconsin-Madison, Geography, 1991.

Chris Burnett, a prominent alto saxophonist, jazz musician and composer, who began his active career at 18 years old as a performing artist with the US Army Bands Career Program, is performing live starting at 8pm located at the Q Enoteca (308 W Commercial St, Springfield, MO 65803)
Chris Burnett is an alto saxophonist, composer, recording artist and educator who began his active career at the age of 18 years old when he was selected by audition and accepted for musical service as a performing artist with the US Army Bands Career Program, where he performed and toured with several noteworthy professional US military band organizations for audiences at numerous locations in the continental United States and overseas. Subsequently, Mr. Burnett has continued as a life-long learner while performing music professionally for over three decades.
Born in Olathe, Kansas, he was ultimately raised in Paola after his family had traveled extensively in early childhood and lived at such places as: France, Michigan and Colorado. His studies in instrumental music began seriously under clarinetist, James R. Fuchs. Mr. Fuchs was the local school band director who exposed him to professional saxophone players like Charles Molina and Gary Foster during those formative years. He has studied with numerous significant teachers and at the Armed Forces School of Music, Webster University, Columbia College, Berklee College of Music, and American University.
Mr. Burnett is a former director of the Jazz Ensemble Program at Missouri University of Science and Technology (formerly University of Missouri-Rolla); a former director of the NATO Jazz Ensemble; and, a former featured performing member of the Faculty Jazz Ensemble of the Armed Forces School of Music that was under the direction of Maurice Williams, Jr. (former leader of the Army Blues Jazz Ensemble).
As a composer, Mr. Burnett is the 1995 5-Star Award of Merit Winner of the National Federation of Music Clubs for his original composition and arrangement for big band, titled “Daedalus”. “Daedalus” was initially recorded by the award-winning Engineer Center Jazz Ensemble and published on the highly acclaimed compact disc recording by the 399th US Army Band, titled “Essayons” – which was also the first-ever CD recording released in that particular military band’s history. Today, Chris Burnett has established a credible reputation as one of the finest alto saxophonists of his generation and is considered among Kansas City’s most respected jazz artists. He has two commercial CD recordings available on the Artists Recording Collective label.

Every year Missouri State participates in RecycleMania, a national competition between colleges and universities to reduce waste and increase recycling. In celebration of RecycleMania, we will be raising awareness and increasing recycling at the Men’s Home Basketball games in February.
Volunteers will stand at the recycling stations before and after the game and during half time to help patrons determine what is recyclable. All volunteers should meet inside the main entrance to JQH arena 15 minutes early to get their location assignment and instructions. As a bonus, volunteers will be able to watch the game from the student section between their shifts.

Ozarks Public Television – Seuss Science Day
Join us for a Seuss-filled day at the Discovery Center! We are looking for energetic and fun loving volunteers to help us out with our very popular Seuss Science Day on Saturday, February 20 at the Discovery Center in Springfield. There are a variety of duties to choose from, with morning and afternoon shifts available.
