Adult Student Welcome Orientation

Each fall and spring semester, Adult Student Services offers an orientation for the adult student to introduce the various services Missouri State University offers. Knowing what to expect is a large part of alleviating anxiety about returning to school. Meet other students who, like yourself, are trying to balance the roles and responsibilities of home, family, and employment while learning more about the following:

Spring Classes Begin

Refund Deadline
January 16
The last day to change sections, drop, or withdraw from spring 2015 first block and full semester classes, with 100% refund.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day
January 19
Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday – no classes/offices closed.
Civil Rights leader, Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. , gained national prominence during the Montgomery, Alabama, bus boycott of 1955-1956 and soon becamse the acknowledged national leader of the growing movement to obtain civil rights for African Americans. His commitment to nonviolence, his courage, and the moral power of his vision, eloquently expressed in masterful oratory and writings, won him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. Toward the end of his life, King became convinced of the interrelatedness of all forms of social, economic, and military oppression and broadened the sphere of his activism. He spoke out against U.S. involvement in the war in Vietnam and was preparing to lead a massive Poor People’s March on Washington when he was assassinated in Memphis on April 14, 1968 while helping to organize the city’s sanitation workers. Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday is observed nationally on the third Monday in January.
Haven
Haven is a required online course for all in-coming freshmen and transfer students to complete to initiate understanding of consent, sexual assault, relationship violence, and bystander intervention. If this course is not completed by the student prior to the student’s spring registration date within the student’s first year at Missouri State University, a Registration Hold will be placed on the student’s account. This hold will be lifted from the account once completion of Haven has occurred.

- Always sign in at: my.missouristate.edu
- After signing in, go under the Academics tab and find the New Student or Transfer Student section. Within this square, there is a training section and the Haven link is in this area. To access Haven, choose the link and you can begin.

Student Activities Council will be kicking off Winter Week by handing out hot chocolate and coffee mugs across from the PSU Info Desk.
Concert: Echosmith
Tuesday, January 13 at 7pm, PSU Theatre
Join Student Activities Council for their FREE Winter Week concert to kick off the new semester. This year’s concert features the up-and-coming band, Echosmith. With the smash hit “Cool Kids” sweeping the nation, Echosmith is a indie-pop, rock band comprised of four siblings from California.
Comedy: Adam Newman
Wednesday, January 14 at 7pm, PSU Theatre
Join Student Activities Council for a night of laughs featuring Adam Newman. Adam’s stand-up has been featured on the Late Night with David Letterman and a half-hour special on Comedy Central. You may have also seen him on @midnight and Last Week Tonight. For more information about Adam, check out him out on Twitter @Adam_Newman.
Movie: Divergent

SAC weekly films starts off this semester with Divergent! Based on the book by Veronica Roth, Divergent is set in a post-apocalyptic world.
In a world divided by factions based on virtues, Tris learns she’s Divergent and won’t fit in. When she discovers a plot to destroy Divergents, Tris and the mysterious Four must find out what makes Divergents dangerous before it’s too late. (c) IMDB

After Hours: Ice Skate Night

As part of the Winter Week festivities, Student Activities Council has rented out Mediacom Ice Park to provide an students with the opportunity to go ice skating for free!
Need a ride to the ice park? Meet SAC members at the PSU Information Desk to catch a free shuttle that will be riding all night.
Winter Wonderland Rock ‘n Bowl

Want to bowl, play ping pong or pool for free? Student Activities Council has rented out Level One Game Center. Any Missouri State student can join us for free! For part of Winter Week, Rock’n’Bowl will feature Winter Wonderland themed activities!
Lecture: Laverne Cox: Moving Beyond Gender Expectations
Tuesday, January 20 at 7pm, Juanita K. Hammons Hall
Laverne Cox is a critically acclaimed actress who currently appears in the Netflix original series Orange is the New Black, playing the groundbreaking role of “Sophia Burset,” an incarcerated African American transgender woman. Laverne is the first trans woman of color to have a leading role on a mainstream scripted television show. Time named Sophia Burset the 4th most influential fictional character of 2013. She transgender advocate who is passionate about telling stories that reflect the transgender experience and the history of nonfiction transgender representation in mainstream media, and learn Cox’s unique story of overcoming challenges to pursue an acting career.

SOFAC Training Presentations

New for the 2014-2015 academic year no organization may receive (Student Organization Funding Allocation Council) SOFAC funding until it has attended a SOFAC Training session.
These one hour trainings will inform your group on all the policies and procedures for SOFAC.

Food Assistance for Students
Mondays and Tuesdays at 3pm-6pm while MSU is in session
The Food Pantry for Missouri State University Students is for any student facing food insecurity. This may be students going hungry, not able to make ends meet, facing a delay in Financial Aid or other assistance, or any other reason.
