Last full week before Thanksgiving and Men’s Basketball home opener

You’ve made it past the drop date for most classes. Congratulations. You’re rewarded with the last full week before Thanksgiving break next Wednesday through Friday and then it’s time to buckle down for final exams and put the finishing touches on those final projects. In the meantime, here are some events to keep you busy until Thanksgiving.

Wednesday, November 16th

SAC Presents Open Mic Night

SAC presents Open Mic Night in the PSU South Lounge from 6 – 8 PM. Come out and see your fellow students perform music, comedy and more, or sign up and perform yourself!

In honor of Native American Heritage Month this week’s SAC Film will be In Whose Honor? Check out our preview and then catch the film at 9PM in the PSU Theater. If you miss it Wednesday night, see it Sunday.

As part of International Education Week the Office of Multicultural Student Services is hosting Swing and Move 2011 in the PSU Ballroom from 8:30-10:30 PM. The dance event will showcase different cultures through dance and will give audience members an opportunity to learn the dances.

Thursday, November 17th

International Education Week continues with the documentary Give A Damn? Catch it in Carrington Auditorium from 6 – 8 PM.

The Office of Multicultural Student Services will host Plains Indian Handgame in PSU Atrium from 7 – 9 PM. The Hand Game is a traditional Native American hiding and guessing game played to the accompaniment of drumming and singing that was played during long cold winter nights.

SAC After Hours Presents: DVD Bingo! from 9 PM until midnight in the PSU Food Court. Everyone loves a good ‘ole game of Bingo! Come play some bingo for many chances to win a free DVD!

Friday, November 18th

The final International Education Week event is the Tour of the Globe in the Morris Center from 5 – 7 PM. The Morris Center becomes a global bazaar for the evening while travelers enjoy the customs and cultures of other locales.

SAC will also be hosting Rock N Bowl. Come by the weekly event for free bowling, billiards and games in the Level 1 Game Center from 7:30-10:30 PM.

Great Events for Great Causes

If you haven’t made it to any of the SAC Giving Back Week events there’s a few great ones left today through Friday. Make sure you check those out and have a great time for a great cause!

Wednesday, Nov. 9th

In honor of Native American heritage month SAC Cultural Affairs Presents: Native American Hoop Dancer Brian Hammill. Brian is ranked as one of the best hoop dancers in the world and has won the World Championship Hoop Dancing Competition in 2009 and 2011. Brian will be performing a sneak peek in the PSU Food Court from 12-12:45 PM followed by a full performance from 7-9 PM in the PSU Theater.

Giving Back Week continues with the SAC Weekly Film: Taking Chance with a brief presentation from current and former marines before the film. Check out our preview of the film and catch it Wednesday and Sunday at 9 PM in the PSU Theater. Admission is free.

Thursday, Nov. 10th

SAC After Hours Presents: Discovery Night! The Discovery Center is a fun interactive center where you can spend quality time with your friends! After Hours is hosting a fun night at the Discovery Center! Come and have a blast with us! The event goes from 9 PM – 12 AM at the PSU Food Court.

Friday, Nov. 11th

This Friday is Veterans Day. MSU faculty, alumni, and friends will provide music to commemorate Veterans Day in the PSU Food Court from 9:45 – 10:15 AM as part of Missouri State’s Own in the USO.

Giving Back Week concludes with comedian Amy Schumer. The Last Comic Standing and Comedy Central’s Roast of Charlie Sheen participant will be doing stand-up comedy in the PSU Theater at 7 PM. Admission is free with a suggested donation going to the Joplin relief effort.

SAC will also be hosting Rock N Bowl. Come by the weekly event for free bowling, billiards and games in the Level 1 Game Center from 7:30-10:30 PM.

Saturday, Nov. 12th

On Saturday expand your knowledge of world cultures at Missouri State University’s Association of International Students 33rd Annual International Banquet and Show. The even features foods, dance routines, skits, musical offerings and other performances from Asian, Africa, Latin America and North America. As well as a fashion show featuring traditional costumes from around the world. Tickets are $20 for general admission, $15 for students on sale until Nov. 11th. Check here for more info.

Monday, Nov. 14th

If you’re looking to get more information on the future of health care reform come by Health Care Reform and YOU – A Town Hall Discussion in Springfield. The event is open to the public and will have a brief presentation followed by an open discussion with the audience. The event takes place in the PSU at 7 PM.

Tuesday, Nov. 15th

Interested in MSU’s Study Away program? Check out Study Away 101 in PSU 309 from 10 – 11 AM.

Make your voice heard at the Student Activities Council Meeting and Student Government Association Meeting at 4 PM and 5:30 PM respectively. Both meetings are held in PSU 313.

SAC presents Quite Tickled Tuesday from 7-8:30 PM. Come by and listen to students showcase their comedic talents or show up before the show starts and sign up to perform yourself. Get participation prizes and free food! Event is located in the South Lounge of the PSU.

Daylight Savings Weekend

Man last week was a busy one with parades, football, homecoming events and the Cardinals winning the World Series (Birds!). Don’t worry though, there is plenty more planned for the week ahead. Good thing we’ve got daylight savings time to get us an hour back this weekend so we can get it all in. Let’s kick it off with some announcements from Campus Recreation.

COME BACKPACKING with Campus Rec this weekend (11/5-11/6) in the Hercules Glades Wilderness Area! Spend two days and one night in some of the most scenic country in the Midwest. Today (Wednesday, Nov. 2nd)

Today is the final day of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). The event begins on October 31st and is celebrated through November 2nd by Mexicans and Mexican Americans, this holiday has its roots in two traditions: the Christian observance of All Saints and All Souls Day, and two Aztec festivals in which the souls of the dead were welcomed back to visit those who remembered them.

Mad Science Presents CSI: LIVE! at Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts. Wednesday, November 2 at 7:00 pm. Student rush tickets are available one hour prior to the performance for $10 with a valid student I.D.

Mad Science presents CSI: LIVE! returns to Hammons Hall with its exciting, interactive journey through the fascinating world of crime scene investigations – with tons of audience interaction, cutting-edge forensic science, cool technology and thrilling special effects!

Thursday, Nov. 3rd

SAC After Hours Presents: Capture the Flag! At 9 PM on Thursday join SAC as they host a campus wide game of tag. Meet up in the food court and get divided into teams before the start of the game!

Friday, Nov. 4th

University Film Series – Guest Filmmakers Lisa & David Boyd. Come by the PSU Theater at 7 PM on Friday for screenings and talkback sessions with guest filmmakers David and Lisa Boyd. They’re be showing Two Soldiers an Academy Award Winning Short Film (2003) and Season 1, Episode 5 of Deadwood. David Boyd has worked on many TV series including Firefly, Deadwood, Without a Trace, Friday Night Lights, and Men of a Certain Age. Lisa Rhoden Boyd has worked as a produce and actress on many films and TV shows.

SAC Presents: Rock N Bowl. Get all the free bowling, billiards and games you can handle at the Level 1 Game Center this Friday from 7:30 – 10:30 PM thanks to SAC!

Saturday, Nov. 5th

The Blanks (Ted’s Band from Scrubs) at Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts. Saturday, November 5 at 8:00 pm. Advance student rush tickets are available NOW through showtime for $10 with a valid student I.D.

The Blanks, aka “Ted’s Band” or “The Worthless Peons”, have immediate recognition from their 8 years on the TV show Scrubs. This slightly off-center quartet performs and sings family-friendly entertainment with plenty of musical and sketch comedy, capped off with a meet-and-greet with the guys in the lobby after the show.

Sunday, Nov. 6th

Get ready to travel back in time an hour when daylight savings time ends at 2 AM. Don’t forget to wind those clocks back a full hour!

Tuesday, Nov. 7th

Make your voice heard. Attend the Student Activities Council Meeting at 4 PM and get your say in what events student involvement fees go to sponsor. Then at 5:30 PM join us for the Student Government Association Meeting both in PSU 313.

SAC Lectures Presents: Kamau Bell Curve: Ending Racism in About an Hour. Listen to guest speaker W. Kamau Bell move his audience through stories about Racism at 7 PM in the PSU Theater.

“The Curve is a comedic exploration of the current state of America’s racism, combined with a little (unknown) history, a little Powerpoint, and a whole bunch of Kamau. And because racism is always attacking in new ways and from new angles, Kamau attacks back by constantly adding new material. On Thursday, October 20th come by the PSU Theater for The Big Gay Talent Show. From 7-9 PM see the variety of talents MSU students have as they put on a show of singing, dancing, comedy and more! Admission is free, but it’s asked that you bring a toiletry donation to benefit the AIDS Project of the Ozarks.

After the talent show test your luck at SAC After Hours Presents: Casino Night! From 9 PM until midnight play Black Jack, Texas Hold’em, and many more casino games in the PSU Food Court.

On Friday, October 21st Professor W.D. Blackmon will be reading selected chapters from his new book, Blood and Milk: A Novel in Stories at the Moon city Faculty Rotational Readding. The event is in the PSU Theater from 7 PM – 9 PM. Admission is free.

Friday night bowl for free at SAC Presents: Rock N Bowl. From 7:30 PM – 10:30 PM SAC offers free bowling, billiards, and games at the Level 1 Game Center in the PSU.

Compete in the 3rd Annual Justice Jeweler’s Diamond Dash this Saturday, October 22nd from 10 AM – 1 PM. The Diamond Dash is a high-tech free scavenger hunt for a $10,000 diamond ring in downtown Springfield. The event is sponsored by the Marketing Club. Monday, October 24th come by the PSU Ballroom for the Up ’til Dawn Kick Off Party. Register and learn about the new Up ’til Dawn program. The event lasts from 10 AM – 8 PM.

Monday night SAC Presents: Comedian Hal Sparks. The stand up comedian is perhaps best known for his work as a correspondent on VH1’s “I Love the…” series. The event is free in the PSU Theater at 7 PM.

Don’t forget to come by the PSU Food Court today from 11:30 AM – 1 PM for free samples and giveaways from the Union Club as part of our Explore PSU event. After today You’ll only have two more chances to sign up for our great prize packages.

We’ve also got Academic Intergrity Days Show What You Know: Academic Integrity Trivia Night in the PSU Theater from 7 – 9:30 PM tonight. Come by and compete for prizes in a trivia competition centered around Academic Integrity Policy.

The Counseling and Testing Center is offering educational free, anonymous screenings for a range of common emotional conditions that are often misunderstood on Thursday from 10 AM – 2 PM during National Depression Screening Day.

Thursday at 7 PM come by the PSU Theater to listen as Fall Convocation speaker Douglas Rushkoff gives his speech Program or be Programmed on the Impact of technology and digital media in society. Check out more on the event here. Or listen to an interview about the convocation here.

After the convocation come by the PSU Food Court for SAC Presents: Rainbow Dance! Dance the night away with SAC in honor of LGBT month. There will be music, food and great dancing. Wear a solid color of your choice to contribute to the rainbow!

On Friday, October 7th make sure you wear denim and your BearWear to support Breast Cancer Research. Then head to the Making Strides on Pink Ice MSU Hockey game at Mediacom Ice Park at 7 PM as they take on NIU. Then on Saturday there will be a silent auction for the pink jerseys the players wear and all proceeds will go to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. More info here.

At 7:30 PM on Friday SAC will be hosting the weekly event Rock N Bowl come by for free bowling in the Level 1 Game Center on the first floor of the PSU.
