Volunteering in the Year of the Dragon

Are you ready for the 11th Annual Community Volunteer Fair? On Wednesday, February 1st 50 Springfield area nonprofit agencies will be on campus to discuss current and upcoming volunteer and service-learning opportunities. Learn how you can help to make a difference and win great door prizes.

Celebration of the Chinese New Year continues this week through Friday. If you missed it, the Chinese New Year fell on January 23rd representing the Year of the Dragon. Check out the schedule below for information on the rest of this weeks celebratory events.

Intramural registration for the Racquetball 1 Tournament and the IFC Bowling League is this Friday, 1/27.

Bikini Boot Camp is back! Our trained instructors are here to motivate you through toning and cardio exercises to get that bikini bod ready for break. Sessions begin in February and registration ends soon. More information.

Spring Registration for all intramurals, outdoor trips and free clinics, BearFit classes, wellness programs, and various special programs and certifications is live! Details on these opportunities can be found on our website.

Wednesday, January 25th

From 3 – 4:30 PM celebrate the Chinese New Year with a performance of Chinese music by Dr. John Prescott in Siceluff Hall Library, 124.

Come see 30 Minutes or Less in the PSU Theater as part of SAC’s free film series. The film starts at 9 PM. Catch it again Sunday at 9 as well. Check out our preview.

Thursday, January 26th

Today’s Chinese New Year events are a Chinese Tea Ceremony from 12 – 1 PM and a Chinese Painting by Professor Hing Wah Hatch from 12 – 1 PM. Both events will be in Siceluff Hall Library, 124.

Trivia Night at the PSU - January 26th at 9 PM

SAC will be hosting Trivia Night as part of its weekly After Hours series from 9 PM – 12 AM in the PSU Food Court. Come by with a team of 5 people. Each student on the first place team wins a $30 giftcard, second place gets $20 giftcards, and third place gets $10 giftcards. Categories will include pop culture, sports, history and taste tests. If you don’t have a team, teams can be formed at the event.

The Chinese New Year celebration wraps up with Chinese Calligraphy by Li Yang in Siceluff Hall Library, 124 from 1 – 2 PM.

Now that you’ve had a couple days to get settled back into things at Missouri State, we’re going to get back on to our regular posting schedule starting with our Weekly Preview today. Check the side bar over to the right for a full schedule of our weekly posts.

SAC Winter Week: First Ever Movie Roast featuring Twilight. Performers from the Skinny Improv will be roasting the film “Twilight”. So whether you’re a Twilight fan or not join us in the PSU Theater from 7 – 9 PM for a few laughs at the expense of Twilight.

Come out to IFC Recruitment Information Night to learn about Fraternity Life and specific fraternities at Missouri State. 6 – 8 PM at PSU Ballroom West.

Thursday, January 19th

Thursdays Winter Week event is After Hours: Skating at Mediacom Ice Park. Join us from 9 PM – 12 AM for free ice skating at Mediacom Ice Park. Catch one of the vans in front of Blair Shannon for a ride to the rink as well as a round of Cash Van on your trip.

Wrap up Winter Week with a Concert Featuring Breathe Carolina. Featuring killer lead single “Blackout”–a bevy of 80s-tinged electro melodies and hip-shakingly infectious driving beats–every inch of the album “Hell Is What You Make It” is designed to grab you by the hand and drag you to the dancefloor.

Hope you all had a great break. We’re fully rested and ready to bring you info on all the great events coming up in the Spring 2012 semester. Don’t forget we’ve got Martin Luther King Jr. day on Monday and classes start up on Tuesday, January 17th.

On February 1st we’ll have 11th Annual Community Volunteer Fair. The event will feature approximately 50 Springfield area nonprofits discussing different volunteer and service-learning opportunities. Come and learn how you can make a difference in your community.

It’s the final countdown!

No, not the rock song by Swedish rock band Europe. It’s the final countdown for the semester. With just today and tomorrow left before finals week starts up it’s time to buckle down and dust off your text books. There’s still plenty of great events going on this week to give you a break from all that studying.

Spring 2012 Registration for Campus Recreation is live.

bears basketball — The Bears host Oklahoma State in a game televised on ESPNU.

Wednesday, December 7th

The Bears Men’s Basketball plays host to Oklahoma State tonight at JQH Arena. Tip-off is at 8 PM. If you don’t have time to make it out to the game it will also be broadcast on ESPNU.

SAC has a double dose of movies planned for tonight as well with Crazy, Stupid, Love at 6:30 PM followed up by Horrible Bosses at 9 PM. Check out our previews of both films and see Horrible Bosses again on Sunday.

Thursday is the last day of classes for the semester.

Friday, December 9th

Study Day – No classes today so spend the free day getting caught up on all your studying.

What better way to de-stress than with a Finals Massage? SAC will be offering free quick professional massages in the PSU Remembrance Lounge from 11 AM – 5 PM. Come by and relax before finals.

Another great way to get a break from studying is with the SAC Presents: Disney Movie Marathon. From 3 – 7 PM SAC will be showing Disney classics Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and Lion King. They will also be giving out cookies, brownies, lemonade and popcorn. Feel free to bring blankets and pillows and relax with some great Disney movies in PSU Room 315.

Finally, come by the Level 1 Game Center for SAC Presents: Rock N Bowl. From 7:30 – 10 PM SAC will be hosting free bowling, billiards and games.

Saturday, December 10th

Saturday is the official start of finals.

On Saturday night, SAC Comedy will be presenting Amy Schumer. The comedian has been seen most recently on Comedy Central’s Roast of Charlie Sheen and was a contestant on Last Comic Standing. Come have some laughs at 7 PM in the PSU Theater.

Sunday, December 11th

From 9 – 9:20 PM Sunday take part in the Missouri State Flash Rave 2k11. Take a break from studying and celebrate the end of the semester at this 20 minute dance party featuring DJ St. Ames. There will also be free food and other items provided.

Another semester in the books. For those graduating in commencement will be throughout the day Friday. For those not graduating quite yet it’s the first day of winter break!

Welcome back everyone! Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving holiday and got rested up because now is the time to kick it into gear. We’ve only got a week and a half of classes left, and then it’s time to cram 3 months worth of Finance into a few nights of studying. Just review though we know you already have it down pat and are going to ace all your finals. In the meantime we’ve got some great events as usual to keep you occupied when you’re not preparing for finals.

The Blair-Shannon Grand Lounge will be hosting Rudolph’s Five & Dime: A Holiday Bazaar on Thursday from 9 AM – 6 PM and Friday from 9 AM – 2 PM with an auction at noon on Friday. Come by and pick up some gifts. All proceeds will go to the Wilda F. Looney Residence Life Leadership Scholarship.

Creative Writing Program presents Outstanding Students in Fiction and Poetry as part of its fall 2011 Moon City Student Invitational Reading. From 7 PM – 8:30 PM in the PSU Theater see students show off their writing talents in the areas of fiction and poetry.

Afterwards head down to the Level 1 Game Center for free bowling, billiards and games as part of SAC Presents: Rock N Bowl. Event runs from 7:30 – 10:30 PM.

The PSU plays host to the 46th Annual Elizabethan Christmas Dinners in the PSU Ballroom from 6:15 – 10 PM. The Dinners are a unique celebration of the Holiday Season, our way of welcoming those who are new on campus as well as those who have been attending each year! More info.
