Hospitality Leadership

Bringing Hotel Industry Analytics into the Classroom

January 27, 2014 by Katie Tucker

Dr. Crafts and Lamae Koogler, HRA faculty, recently completed the Certification in Hotel Industry Analytics (CHIA) Train-the-Trainer program. By completing this process, the faculty will be able to prepare the students for the CHIA Certification. This certification program offered by the STR SHARE center, ICHRIE and the AH&LEI provides students the opportunity to study, analyze and review current hotel industry data. According to STR, “Recipients have proven that they can ‘do the math’ and interpret the results.”

The CHIA curriculum includes hotel industry foundations, hotel math fundamentals, hotel industry performance reports and property level benchmarking with STR reports. As students work through the curriculum, they are presented with a number of application exercises which promote critical thinking and develop analytical skills. As trainers in the CHIA program, Dr. Crafts and Ms. Koogler can incorporate these lodging fundamentals and methodologies into a number of HRA classes including Introduction to Lodging, Advanced Lodging Operations, Analyzing Financial Performance in Hospitality Operations and Hospitality Marketing and Revenue Management. After completion of this certification, students should have a strong foundation in interpreting hotel industry data making them more marketable for their careers in the industry.
