Making the classroom more hospitable

These teachers are ready to tackle the new school year.

September 15, 2017 by Tori York

At Missouri State University, we are committed to education—all kinds of education. Whether it is continuing with added degrees or adding to effectiveness of former college graduates, CNAS is ready to help.

On July 24, 2017, teachers from 25 different schools across Missouri arrived at Pummill Hall for a pre-conference workshop for the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education/Family and Consumer Conference (MoEFACS).

The goal: to provide teachers with new information and skills to take back to their classrooms.

Speakers

“A goal in workshop planning is to connect these teacher with industry. Because of the department’s strong relationships with hospitality professionals, we are able to provide a dynamic group of industry speakers.” Katie Tucker, Hospitality Leadership Academy coordinator, said.

This year’s presenters were:

  • Melanie Grand, hospitality leadership, faculty
  • Brad Green, SGC Foodservice, director of sales
  • Chef Curtis Adams, SGC Foodservice, executive chef
  • Chef Quintin Easton, Chartwells, executive chef

This workshop focused on learning what made a successful and profitable catering company. It also gave participants tools from the industry that could be applied to the classroom and fundraisers.

Graduate credit

Something new this year was that graduate credit was offered for the pre-conference.

“The Hospitality Leadership Academy grant provided 14 scholarships covering the full tuition of the course,” Tucker said. In addition, each participant took home a culinary supply kit for his or her classroom.
