World Hypertension Day: May 17th

May 16, 2025 by Deidre Mings

Celebrate World Hypertension Day: Take Control of Your Blood Pressure

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is often called the “silent killer” because it typically has no symptoms but can lead to serious health complications. This year, World Hypertension Day focuses on the theme: “Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer!” Join on May 17, 2025, to raise awareness and focus on better monitoring and managing blood pressure. Hypertension affects 4 in 10 adults over 25, and 9 in 10 adults will develop it by age 80.

Hypertension Treatment Costs

Hypertension treatment accounts for one of the University’s highest costs under the prescription drug coverage portion of our Self-funded Health Plan. In a self-funded plan, the University directly assumes the financial responsibility for providing health benefits.

Get Your Blood Pressure Tested

Blood pressure screenings are covered at 100% for employees on both the Base and Buy-up health plans when done as part of a wellness screening by network providers. Schedule your appointment at Magers Health and Wellness Center or find a Mercy PPO network provider.

Prescription Coverage and Savings

Our prescription plan, managed by Med-Impact (formerly known as Elixir), includes the following:

  • Generic Incentive: Choose generic drugs to save—costs are limited to the price of the generic if available.

  • Other Copay Rules: Brand drugs that have a generic equivalent will be 50% coinsurance at both retail pharmacies and Magers Pharmacy. All other drugs filled at Magers Pharmacy will have 20% coinsurance, which is a 10% savings compared to other pharmacies.

  • Step Therapy: Try a cheaper drug first. If it doesn’t work, your doctor can provide documentation to waive this requirement.

Lifestyle Tips to Combat Hypertension

Exercise, eat well, and join Employee Wellness programs like Yoga, Cooking Talks, Nutrition talks, and more. Campus Recreation offers various fitness options, including BearFit classes, which may be eligible for the non-credit fee waiver.
