Children’s Dental Health Month

February 3, 2026 by Deidre Mings

🦷 Prioritize Dental Health in 2026

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month — a reminder that strong oral hygiene habits and routine dental visits are essential for lifelong oral health. Establishing preventive care early helps reduce the risk of cavities, gum disease, and more complex (and costly) procedures later.

The American Dental Association 2026 Brushing Calendar is available for digital download. This 12-month calendar is valuable year-round for promoting healthy behaviors like brushing twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste to help prevent dental disease.

MSU’s dental benefits are designed to support employees and their eligible dependents in maintaining healthy smiles year-round.

🪥 MSU Dental Benefits Overview (2026)

The MSU dental plan provides comprehensive coverage, including:

✔ Preventive Care

  • 100% coverage
  • No deductible

✔ Annual Benefit Maximum

  • $3,000 per person, per calendar year
(Combined maximum for all dental services)

✔ Orthodontia

  • 50% of eligible charges
  • For dependents under age 19
  • Up to $3,000 per calendar year
  • No lifetime maximum
  • Separate deductible: $50 individual / $150 family

✔ Implants

  • 50% of covered charges
  • Up to $3,000 per calendar year
  • Separate deductible: $50 individual / $150 family

✔ General Dental Deductible

  • $50 individual / $150 family
  • Applies to all services except orthodontia and implants

💲 Maximize Your Savings

To lower out-of-pocket costs:

  • Choose a direct contract or in-network dental PPO participating provider
  • Take advantage of negotiated provider discounts

Out-of-network services are reimbursed based on usual and customary allowances, which may result in higher member responsibility.

🏥 Dental services & the MSU Medical Insurance Plan

Dental services are generally excluded under the medical plan. However, certain procedures requiring anesthesia in a hospital setting may be covered for:

  • Children under age 5
  • Individuals who are severely disabled
  • Those with qualifying medical conditions

💳 Flexible Spending Account (FSA)

If you participate in the Cafeteria/Flex Spending Plan, you may use pre-tax dollars for eligible dental expenses, including:

  • Deductibles
  • Coinsurance
  • Orthodontia
  • Other qualified dental services

If you still have remaining 2025 FSA funds, eligible expenses must be incurred before the end of the 2½-month grace period (March 15, 2026) in order to avoid forfeiture.

🚑 Accident Plan Coverage

Employees enrolled in the Allstate Accident Plan may be eligible for reimbursement of routine dental exams — even if unrelated to an accident. The benefit provides $50 or $75 (based on plan option) for physician treatment when a claim is filed.

Medical Expense Benefit Under the Accident Plan

If a covered person, as a result of an injury, requires medical or surgical treatment, the Accident Plan pays expenses incurred for treatment up to the principal amount stated in the policy. Covered expenses are limited to:

  • Physician fees
  • X-rays
  • Emergency room services

This benefit includes treatment for dental repair to sound natural teeth when a licensed dentist diagnoses the need for repair as resulting from the covered injury.

📝 Enrollment Information

Dental, Medical, Flex Spending and Accident plan changes may be made:

  • During Open Enrollment (November 1 – December 1)
  • Within 31 days of a qualifying life event
