Mock Trial Team extends competitive season with big wins at regionals

February 27, 2024 by Lynn M. Lansdown

Missouri State University’s Mock Trial team continued its remarkable 2023-2024 season by earning a trip to the first rounds of national competition.

With their winning performances at the regional competition in Norman, OK, the team now heads to the American Mock Trial Association’s Opening Round Championship Series or “ORCS.”

The ORCS will be held in Memphis, TN, March 7-10.

“We have 10 days to prepare for ORCS!” said Dr. Jennifer LaPrade, Mock Trial coach and assistant professor in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice.

“I am so proud of our team,” LaPrade said. “These students work incredibly hard and represent the best and brightest of Missouri State.”

“Memphis, here we come!”

Team awards

Like many schools with Mock Trial teams, MSU sends two teams to a Mock Trial competition.

One of MSU’s teams earned a spot in the Top 6, said LaPrade. “This makes them automatically advance to the next round.”

The second team earned Honorable Mention, which puts them on the waitlist to compete if a spot opens up for ORCS.

Individual awards

Meanwhile, individual members of the team were recognized at the regionals for their outstanding efforts.

Zackary Collison – Outstanding Witness
Layna Mangiapanello – Outstanding Witness
Josh Roberts – Outstanding Attorney
Alyssa Roney – Outstanding Witness

Gerontology program hosts 27th annual Senior Art Exhibition

February 27, 2024 by Damilola R. Oyedeji

Hosted by Missouri State University’s gerontology program, the 27th annual Senior Art Exhibition will run from March 6-April 3 at the Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts.

Guests can view the selected pieces from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. March 6-April 3 on the fourth and fifth floors of Hammons Hall. The event is free and open to all.

Mark your calendar for the Senior Art Exhibition

The juried fine arts exhibition allows visual artists aged 60 or older to submit two original entries completed in the last three years, framed and prepared for hanging. Artists also have opportunities to sell their artwork.

The exhibition is co-sponsored by Jean and Jerry Sanders, Studio 55 Arts Guild, Robert (Butch) Purvis from Corebridge Financial Services and Copy This.

Founded in 1996 by Dr. Bradley Fisher, faculty emeritus and former gerontology program coordinator at MSU, this Senior Art Exhibition creates opportunities for older adults to be seen and heard.

“It’s a stereotype that old age causes irrelevance, inactivity, uninventiveness and the inability to try new things. This exhibition is our contribution to celebrating creativity in later life and giving seniors a medium to showcase their art,” Fisher said.

Planning the exhibition demands a high level of commitment and creativity from everyone involved, according to Dr. Lisa Hall, professor and gerontology program coordinator,

“Dr. Fisher has been planning this exhibition since September, artists could have been working on a piece for months or even years before they submit it and students who volunteer dedicate themselves throughout the duration of the program,” Hall said. Missouri State University’s African and African American Studies program welcomed Dr. Maurice Gipson as guest speaker for its annual lecture series Feb. 7.

Gipson, who earned his M.A. in history at MSU, presented “Black Dirt, Black People and Black Power: The Radical Road to Freedom in Arkansas.”

His topic explored the work of Arkansas activists who embraced Black Power as an organizing philosophy during the 1960s and 1970s.

Gipson currently serves as Vice Chancellor, Division of Inclusion, Diversity and Equity at the University of Missouri-Columbia, as well as an affiliate faculty member of the history department. He earned his doctorate in history at the University of Mississippi.

Since its inauguration in 2015, the African and African American lecture series has been held annually, welcoming scholars from Mississippi State University, Rhodes College, University of Illinois, University of Kansas, St. Louis University, University of Minnesota and University of Oklahoma.

The African and African American Studies program is housed within the Department of History.

Sustainability a key factor in production of “Mr. Burns: A Post-Electric Play”

February 26, 2024 by Lynn M. Lansdown

MSU’s Department of Theatre and Dance will present “Mr. Burns: A Post-Electric Play” Feb. 29-March 4 in Coger Theatre, Craig Hall.

Assistant professor of theatre and dance Karen Sabo directs the play.

Show times are Feb. 29-March 2, 7:30 p.m. and March 3, 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for students and seniors. MSU students can receive special advance purchase discounts with an MSU ID.

A post-apocalyptic play with a quirky pop culture twist

“Mr. Burns” has been on Karen Sabo’s radar for some time.

“This is a play I’ve been pitching to places for quite a few years because I have wanted to direct it,” she said.

Sabo was intrigued both by the play’s storyline and its backstory.

“The playwright, Anne Washburn, was commissioned to write it about ten years ago by a New York City theatre group called The Civilians, and they asked her to explore what would happen to a pop culture narrative after a breakdown of society,” Sabo explained.

The resulting three-act play explores that “breakdown” by transporting audiences through 75 years in a post-apocalyptic society.

Most of the population has died, nuclear plants are unattended and leaking, and the electric grid is gone in this dreary world.

The survivors seek solace in performance. One of their immediate outlets is to reenact excerpts from the pop culture phenomenon “The Simpsons.”

Spanning generations to celebrate the dramatic impulse

Sabo and her assistant director, senior theater education major RyLea Clark, described “Mr. Burns” as a show that celebrates youth culture, theater history and the human dramatic impulse.

“I think it’s a perfect play to do on college campuses for students because it marries art and entertainment so well, and for all those students taking Intro-to-Theatre-type courses, it incorporates a lot of material they learn, such as about the universal human impulse to dramatize stories,” Sabo said.

“Everyone knows the Simpsons,” said Clark, highlighting the cross-generational relatability of the play’s subject matter.

Sabo’s production team was eager to start working on the creative aspects of the project in part because of that pop culture connection.

“They’re excited to work on the show because it legitimizes an element of pop culture, and that’s really important to the lives of young people,” Sabo said. “I know that TV shows, especially cartoons, can seem like meaningless ephemera, but they’re the stories of our times and represent who we are at this moment.”
