Gerontology program readies students to work in the “longevity economy”

The American population is getting older—quickly.

Dr. Maureen Templeman (standing, right) listens to one of the MSU 62 participants in the Unlearning Ageism project.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, older adults will outnumber children in the U.S. by 2034. The number of people in the U.S. age 65 and older is expected to grow to nearly 90 million by 2050.

As coordinator of Missouri State’s gerontology program, Dr. Maureen Templeman, assistant professor in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Gerontology, always has statistics on hand. She can quickly illustrate just how broadly a gerontology education can be applied to what economists call the “longevity economy.” The term refers to the goods, services and industries driven by older adults’ needs and spending habits, Templeman said.

A recent AARP statistic, for example, estimates that adults age 50+ contribute $8.3 trillion annually to the U.S. economy. According to Templeman, this trend contradicts the stereotype that older adults are dependent. Instead, they are consumers, workers, caregivers and community members.

And employers are looking for professionals who can address the needs of this growing population.

Workforce training for the “longevity economy”

Templeman wants students to know that gerontology is not a niche field of study. It is a vibrant and growing career option.

“It’s relevant to almost every career path you can imagine,” Templeman said. “We live and work in an aging society.”

In short, gerontology students graduate with skillsets that can be used in any career. These include, but are not limited to, healthcare, social work, law, finance, public policy, education, architecture, communications and technology.

“Really, any field where understanding the needs and experiences of older adults is an asset,” Templeman said.

The Intergenerational Artistic Expression exhibition is on view at Missouri State University’s Cabot Gallery July 7-Aug. 1.

The Cabot Gallery is open Tuesday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. It is located at 215 West Mill Street, inside Brick City’s BRK3.

A special First Friday Art Walk reception for the exhibition will take place Aug. 1 from 6-8 p.m.

Exhibit inspired by interdisciplinary collaboration

The exhibit features a range of collaborative and individual artworks created by students from diverse backgrounds, including those over 62 and first-generation college students.

The exhibit grew from the inspiration of Diane Denton, a per course instructor in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Gerontology (SAG). Denton approached the department with a course she had developed, which led to an invitation to teach. Shortly after, SAG picked up the course, and the Department of Art and Design made space for it, leading to a creative collaboration.

Ultimately, the exhibition invites viewers to see others and themselves with compassion. Denton hopes visitors “see people’s humanity, find encouragement and be willing to challenge themselves. It’s about finding space for someone else’s story” and embracing our own.

To put into practice community engagement — a pillar of the Missouri State University public affairs mission — students in two gerontology courses help with the historic Gillioz Theatre Midweek Matinees, which are geared toward senior citizens.

The courses, Mental Health and Aging (GER/PSY 370) and Social Forces and Aging (GER/SOC 375), offer experiential learning and community engagement opportunities to students.

According to Dr. Lisa Hall, associate professor and gerontology program coordinator, the partnership began in the spring 2023 semester and 29 MSU students have participated so far.

The Midweek Matinees take place every Wednesday. [Read more…] about Gerontology students partner with historic Gillioz Theatre Midweek Matinees

Gerontology program hosts 27th annual Senior Art Exhibition

Hosted by Missouri State University’s gerontology program, the 27th annual Senior Art Exhibition will run from March 6-April 3 at the Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts.

Guests can view the selected pieces from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. March 6-April 3 on the fourth and fifth floors of Hammons Hall. The event is free and open to all.

Mark your calendar for the Senior Art Exhibition

The juried fine arts exhibition allows visual artists aged 60 or older to submit two original entries completed in the last three years, framed and prepared for hanging. Artists also have opportunities to sell their artwork.

The exhibition is co-sponsored by Jean and Jerry Sanders, Studio 55 Arts Guild, Robert (Butch) Purvis from Corebridge Financial Services and Copy This.

Founded in 1996 by Dr. Bradley Fisher, faculty emeritus and former gerontology program coordinator at MSU, this Senior Art Exhibition creates opportunities for older adults to be seen and heard.

“It’s a stereotype that old age causes irrelevance, inactivity, uninventiveness and the inability to try new things. This exhibition is our contribution to celebrating creativity in later life and giving seniors a medium to showcase their art,” Fisher said.

Planning the exhibition demands a high level of commitment and creativity from everyone involved, according to Dr. Lisa Hall, professor and gerontology program coordinator,

“Dr. Fisher has been planning this exhibition since September, artists could have been working on a piece for months or even years before they submit it and students who volunteer dedicate themselves throughout the duration of the program,” Hall said.
