Missouri State’s dance program holds first research symposium

May 28, 2025 by Lynn M. Lansdown

Missouri State University’s dance program, part of the Department of Theatre and Dance, held its first ever research symposium on the Springfield campus April 27-May 1.

Conceptualized and spearheaded by dance instructor Brittney Banaei, the event was developed to immerse dance students into a scholarly environment that reflects the professional dance world.

“Although dance is most often associated with performance, and our students are certainly excellent performers, there are a multitude of ways to engage with dance which are applicable in the ‘real world,’” Banaei explained.

For the symposium, Banaei said its organizers included “creative research, performance as research, embodied knowledge and inter/cross disciplinary research” in addition to traditional scholarly applications.

“Having the space to present cutting edge, research-integrated work is crucial for a dance program to stay responsive, relevant and connected to a rapidly evolving professional field,” Banaei said.

Several dance faculty and students participated in the event, which included presentations, roundtable discussions, creative and scholarly research projects and performances incorporating what students had learned. Several graduating BFA and BS in dance majors were featured as keynote speakers.

Approximately 30 students participated in the symposium, according to Banaei. Participation for the first symposium was limited to students enrolled in Dance Research Methods, Dance Composition II, Dance Fundamentals and West African Dance. In the future, however, Banaei hopes the conference can implement an open submission/application process.

Immersive scholarly experience

According to Banaei, the symposium gives Missouri State’s dance students hands-on experience in scholarly research by immersing them in a conference-like setting. This is essential to give students an advantage as they begin their careers, she noted.

The symposium mirrored several aspects of a typical scholarly conference. Students in the Dance Research Methods course submitted their final papers for review and acceptance to the conference. This process mimicked those of any conference or journal. These same students were also asked to create poster presentations of their work as well as a research statement, which they used to introduce themselves during the roundtable discussion.

“The entire process had the pedagogical goal of taking students through the lifecycle of a research project and developing the skills to submit to and present at conferences,” Banaei said.

Similarly, Dance Composition II students needed to think about their work as research, she added. They approached their choreography and performances by exploring a number of different methodologies.

“Research-integrated approaches to creative work are now standard and expected in a typical dance MFA program and a large portion of the dance performance landscape,” Banaei said. Learning this approach is essential to dance students who plan to pursue a graduate degree or a performance career outside of commercial dance, she explained.

Career prospects enhanced by dance studies

Jaden Brown, a senior BFA dance major, grew up dancing and taught at dance studios throughout high school and college. After graduation, she will start working for “Vitality in Motion,” an organization that brings dance to elderly care facilities.

“I’m very fortunate that my work throughout college and within college set me up for such a successful career path,” she said.

Ryan Sohrab, a junior musical theatre major, also sees his dance studies as essential to his career prospects.

“We’re in a generation of performance work that rides hand in hand with spectacle, especially performer spectacle,” he explained. “Having heightened dance capabilities will no doubt allow me to propel my career towards heights I doubt would be in reach if I had treated it as secondary to acting and singing.”

Freshman Abbey Racer, a BFA dance major, plans to be a professional choreographer. She also said her studies are vital to meeting that goal.

“Learning as much as possible in as many styles as possible is super important,” she said. “It will help me be the best and most informed choreographer I can be.”

“My experience in the MSU dance program has been one I wouldn’t trade for the world,” Brown added. “I have been given so many tools and guidance that have allowed me to feel comfortable going into the working field.”

Missouri State University and the Center for Ozarks Poverty Research (COPR) hosted the second annual Community Conference on Poverty April 11, 2025, on the Springfield campus.

Anthropology professor Dr. Marnie Watson and sociology instructor Christina Ryder founded COPR. They currently serve as co-directors for the organization. They also teach in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Gerontology (SAG), part of the Reynolds College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (RCASH) at Missouri State.

Journalist and anthropologist Dr. Brian Goldstone was the conference’s keynote speaker. In addition to discussing his latest book, “There is No Place For Us: Homeless and Working in America,” Goldstone participated in a panel discussion and signed copies of his new book afterward.

Watson and Ryder saw an opportunity to build the second conference around the theme of housing and employment with the release of Goldstone’s book. Conference topics and themes differ each year, they said.

“Each year we choose a different angle to look at poverty from,” Watson said. “The first year we focused on housing and homelessness. This second year the focus was on housing and employment, specifically individuals who are unhoused and working.”

HERC sociology students present research at regional conference

April 30, 2025 by Lynn M. Lansdown

Students representing Missouri State University’s Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Gerontology (SAG) recently presented their research at the Midwest Sociological Society (MSS) conference in Chicago, Illinois.

Gabriel Patino, Sophia Sampson, Anthony Lam, Jayden Echols, Sophia Dela Coleta and Bruno Guerra Miranda are members of the Health Equity Research Collective (HERC). HERC is directed by Associate Professor Dr. Kyler Sherman-Wilkins.

Founded in 2021 by Sherman-Wilkins, HERC consists of undergraduate students who conduct research in the social, behavioral and health sciences. They specifically research health inequities, Sherman-Wilkins explained.

The goal of HERC is to provide talented undergraduate students with opportunities to sharpen their research skills. Through HERC, they also gain professional and academic experience, he added.

Regional conference ideal learning environment

Sherman-Wilkins described the MSS conference as an ideal place for undergraduate students to present their research.

“[The MSS conference] combines the rigor of a formal academic conference with a welcoming, encouraging and empowering environment for students,” he explained.

In particular, Sherman-Wilkins enjoys seeing his students interact with leading scholars and professionals.

“In a typical paper session, undergraduate students may be presenting their own work alongside prominent sociologists who have contributed much to the discipline,” he said.

HERC students continue to impress Sherman-Wilkins with their work ethic, critical thinking skills and intellectual curiosity.

“What brings me the most joy as a professor is the ability to work with some of the brightest minds of the next generation,” he said. “This year, the students engaged in amazing projects, all aimed at examining the mechanisms underlying inequities in health.”

Sandel and Brewington attend ALERRT conference

February 3, 2025 by Lynn M. Lansdown

Missouri State University’s Dr. William Sandel, associate professor and assistant director of Partnerships and Outreach in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice (CCJ), and Cody Brewington, director of MSU’s Public Safety Training Center, recently spoke at the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) conference Dec. 2-5, 2024, in San Marcos, Texas.

Sandel said he and Brewington received a special invitation to discuss the success of their Missouri active shooter training program. They spoke in front of law enforcement, fire, emergency management and school officials from across the country, according to CCJ School Director Dr. Brett Garland.

“Cody and I were honored to be invited to represent Missouri,” Sandel said. Only three other states — Virginia, Iowa and Maryland — were invited to the conference, he added.

MSU’s training program partners with the Missouri Office of Homeland Security, according to Sandel and Brewington. The program has received nearly $400,000 in external funding, Garland noted.

Model UN launches competitive season at ACMUN/OKMUN conference

November 20, 2024 by Lynn M. Lansdown

Members of Missouri State University’s Model United Nations (Model UN) attended the 2024 joint Arkansas Collegiate Model United Nations (ACMUN) / Oklahoma Model United Nations (OKMUN) Conference Nov. 2.

Over 20 MSU students served as Model UN delegates in the following councils: United Nations General Assembly First Committee (GA1), Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and Council of the Arab League (AL).

The conference, hosted by Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, promotes collaborative learning and research in pursuit of solving prominent international issues such as cybersecurity and the HIV/AIDS pandemic, said Dr. Ashley Leinweber.

Leinweber is the Model UN faculty advisor and is an associate professor in the Department of Political Science and Philosophy at Missouri State.

In addition to serving as faculty advisor since 2013, Leinweber helped form MSU’s current Model UN chapter. A previous organization, the World Affairs Council (WAC), was disbanded around 2010, Leinweber said.

First competition of the season a big success

This was the first Model UN competition for the MSU team this academic year, Leinweber said. It was also the first time MSU had attended the ACMUN/OKMUN conference.

“We were unsure what to expect,” Leinweber added. “The fact that two of our students won awards was very impressive.” Typically, the teams participates in 1-3 competitions a year.

“We always attend the four-day Midwest Model United Nations conference in St. Louis in February,” Leinweber said. “We are hoping to raise enough funds one day to attend other conferences, especially the National Model United Nations held at the UN Headquarters in New York.”

Meanwhile, for the past two years MSU has hosted the Great Plains Model Arab League conference and will host it again in April 2025.
