Missouri State alumni and faculty reimagine the future at international choral event

Three alumni of Missouri State University’s Chorale attended the International Federation for Choral Music (IFCM) World Symposium on Choral Music Aug. 23-28 in Macau, China.

Tanner Munson, Tim Pallett and Anne Copiaco reunited with their mentor, Dr. Cameron LaBarr, at the “reimagining the future” themed event.

LaBarr is director of choral studies and Clif and Gail Smart Professor of Music at Missouri State. He currently serves as an ICFM board member and was also on the artistic committee for the 2026 symposium.

“It’s wonderful to see Missouri State University alumni involved in the international choral community at such a high level,” LaBarr said. “A huge part of the mission of our program is to bridge cultures across the world through choral music. This is a great example of that being put into practice.”

Munson presents on vocal pedagogy

Tanner Munson discusses vocalization during his presentation at the IFCM World Symposium.

Munson graduated in 2024 with a master’s in vocal pedagogy. He displayed his expertise in his presentation, “The Collective Voice: Building Your Ensemble through the Vocalise.”

“Having the opportunity to present at IFCM’s international conference is an incredible opportunity,” he noted. “Being able to network with like-minded musicians across the globe is invaluable.”

In his presentation Munson, who now teaches at Missouri State, discussed what separates vocalise from other sounds. He reviewed how vocal instructors can target specific skills in repertoire and rehearsal work while empowering singers to communicate their music properly.

Specifically, Munson credits his Missouri State instructors for his success and growth. In addition to LaBarr, Associate Director of Choral Studies Dr. Erin Plisco and voice professor Dr. Chris Thompson were “essential” in helping him prepare.

“There’s no way that I could’ve done this without their guidance and without their help,” he said.

The entire symposium experience was “affirming,” Munson added. “It really helped me feel like I’m on the right path. I’m doing the right thing, I’m doing what needs to be done and I’ve got the best people possible surrounding me and helping me do it.”

Four Missouri State University vocal performance students placed in the final rounds of the Central Regional National Association of Teachers of Singing (CRNATS) student auditions Oct. 31-Nov. 1.

Veronika Yerina, a junior vocal performance and biology double major, placed first in the upper division treble category. She sang Mozart’s “Dove sono i bei momenti.”

Senior vocal performance major Kyleigh Hendrix placed second in the upper division treble category, while sophomore vocal performance major Mara Bannister placed third in lower division treble. Payton Ballinger, who is pursuing a master’s in vocal performance, placed third in advanced division.

All four now advance to the national semifinals, which will be held in the spring of 2026.

Other students participating in the CRNATS competition were Abigail Teberian, Allison Britt, Aryan Neece-McHaffie, Ella Greninger, Noah Maddox, Jacob Leath, Parker Ohman, Kaitlyn Wilson and Wade Bogart. Eight of these students advanced to the semifinal rounds.

Several members of Missouri State’s music faculty traveled with the students. They were Dr. Carol Chapman, voice area coordinator; Dr. Perry Mears, assistant professor of collaborative piano and accompanist; Dr. Chris Thompson, professor of vocal music; Dr. Ann Marie Daehn, professor of vocal music and Opera Workshop; Visiting Artist Kara McBain; and Dr. Paula Patterson, head of the Department of Music.

“We are all very proud of the students that participated in the auditions,” Chapman said.

Missouri State University’s Opera Theatre achieved an impressive milestone, qualifying for the 2025 Robert Hanson National Collegiate Opera Scenes Competition in January.

Three sophomore standouts represented the university during the competition. Jb Love (music performance), Ryan McIntosh (music education) and Veronika Yerina (double major vocal performance and biology) are all members of MSU’s “Opera Bears” club.

MSU Opera director Dr. Ann Marie Daehn and Dr. Chris Thompson, both professors in the Department of Music, oversaw the students’ performances.

“This is a huge accomplishment for our students and speaks to their talent, dedication and hard work,” Daehn said.

Sending three sophomores was a deliberate choice, Daehn added. Most schools tend to send more experienced seniors or returning finalists.

“We focus on giving opportunities to all performers, even younger students,” she said. “This is about providing every one of our students the chance to grow.”

The National Opera Association (NOA) hosted the event at its national conference in Savannah, Georgia. The competition aims to recognize and promote artistic excellence in opera performance in college and university programs.
