Dr. Manuel Meléndez-Sánchez to speak Nov. 3

Missouri State University’s Master of International Affairs (MIA) program will host a talk by Dr. Manuel Meléndez-Sánchez from 5:30-7 p.m. Nov. 3 in the Duane G. Meyer Library Auditorium.

The event is free and open to the public.

Meléndez-Sánchez will discuss the public security strategy of El Salvador’s president Nayib Bukele’s in “The ‘Bukele Model’: Public Security and Democracy in El Salvador.”

Meléndez-Sánchez is currently a visiting fellow at the Kellogg Institute for International Studies at the University of Notre Dame. His visit is part of an informal speaker event series hosted by the MIA program and the Department of Political Science and Philosophy.

International Affairs program to host Dr. Leonardo Villalón Oct. 23

Missouri State University’s Master of International Affairs (MIA) program, part of the Department of Political Science and Philosophy, will host a discussion on Africa’s Sahel region from 5:30-7 p.m. Oct. 23 in the Meyer Library Auditorium.

Featured speaker Dr. Leonardo Villalón will present “A Perfect Storm in the World’s Poorest Region: Security, Democracy and Climate Change in Africa’s Sahel.”

Villalón is Professor of Political Science and African Studies at the University of Florida.

“Dr. Villalón is one of the world’s foremost experts on Sahelian politics,” said Dr. Gabriel Ondetti, Clif and Gail Smart Professor of Political Science and MIA program director. “He has published numerous books, articles and book chapters on the region.”

The event is free and open to the public.

Felbab-Brown to discuss global illicit drug trade Feb. 5

Dr. Vanda Felbab-Brown, a leading expert on the political aspects of the international illicit drug trade, will give a talk on the topic Monday, Feb. 5 from 5-6:30 p.m. in Karls Hall 101.

In “The Global Synthetic Drugs Revolution: Its Geopolitical Implications and Impact Across Latin America,” Felbab-Brown will focus on the synthetic drug trade, which includes fentanyl, methamphetamine and captagon, and how that trade affects Latin America.

The event is free and open to the public.
