History alum Micaela Wiehe wins Fulbright-Hays fellowship

March 10, 2025 by Lynn M. Lansdown

Micaela Wiehe, a 2021 graduate of the Department of History at Missouri State University, has been awarded a Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad fellowship to study in Mexico and Spain.

She is now a fourth-year doctoral student of history at Penn State University.

Describing herself as a colonial Latin American historian, Wiehe explained that she specializes in the history of the Indigenous people group, the Nahuas, of the early colonial period in Mexico.

“My dissertation research explores patterns of Mesoamerican migrations rooted in political, social and environmental change during Mexico’s early colonial period,” she said. “I look at how environmental exploitation and the labor systems used to support it led to a variety of migration patterns with long-lasting effects.”

Wiehe’s doctoral work is an extension of her master’s thesis at Missouri State University. “My thesis examined the evolution of the Spanish colonial legal system from 1525 to 1820 by analyzing the way that the Nahua people influenced, maneuvered and commanded a powerful conversation with the Spanish king through interactions with and within the law.”

As part of her Fulbright-Hays award, Wiehe will spend ten months researching in Mexico City, Mexico, and one month in Seville, Spain.

While in Mexico, she will work as a researcher in affiliation with the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). She will also volunteer with PSYDEH (Psicologia y Derechos Humanos), a Mexican non-profit organization for Indigenous women. Finally, Wiehe will participate in an intensive Nahuatl language course taught by Indigenous instructors in Zacatecas, Mexico.

While in Seville, Wiehe will work in the Archivo General de Indias in affiliation with Pablo de Olavide University Sevilla (UPO). Many of the colonial documents pertaining to her research are housed in that collection.

Her efforts, Wiehe explained, will allow her “to produce a well-informed research project on the history of migration in Mexico.”

“People have moved and migrated throughout the Americas for centuries, long before any Europeans arrived on this continent,” she added. “It’s important, though, to consider why, how, when and where the migration patterns we see today came from.”

Fulbright dream becomes reality

Wiehe originally planned to apply for a Fulbright fellowship while at Missouri State. The COVID-19 pandemic delayed those plans, however. She thus waited until she was a doctoral student at Penn State to apply.

It took Wiehe nearly eight months to complete the Fulbright-Hays application. “The application process for the Fulbright-Hays is extensive, including a ten-page grant proposal, two language evaluations, letters of recommendation, a personal statement and letters of support from professors in Mexico, Spain.”

All the hard work paid off when she heard from representatives of the Fulbright-Hays fellowship program.

“When I read the first line of the email offering me the grant, my hands started shaking and I had to sit down,” she said. “I felt a combination of shock, joy and overwhelming relief. It was a moment I had worked toward for nearly five years. I was so grateful to finally arrive.”

The news came as no surprise to members of Wiehe’s thesis committee at Missouri State.

“I was not surprised at all,” said Dr. John Chuchiak, Wiehe’s thesis director. “These grants are extremely competitive, and her work is of the highest caliber.”

“She embodies everything that Fulbright stands for,” agreed Dr. Heidi Backes, one of Wiehe’s thesis committee members.

Missouri State University’s Digital Humanities Lab (DHL) is now accepting project proposals for the 2025-26 fiscal year.

“We are excited to be able to offer financial and tech support for innovative research projects,” said Dr. Heidi Backes, associate professor of Spanish and one of DHL’s original founders. “These will be showcased through our website and in annual events hosted by the lab.”

Those interested in applying or wanting more information can visit the DHL website. The website provides information about the proposal process, the project proposal form and other FAQs.

DHL is accepting proposal applications through March 10, 2025.

About the DHL

The DHL, which opened in Fall 2024, is a collaborative effort between the Reynolds College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (RCASH) and the Missouri State University Libraries.

Headquartered in the lower level of the Duane G. Meyer Library, the DHL provides resources and guidance for faculty and students to create digital scholarship projects.

The DHL offers multiple hardware and software resources commonly used in the humanities. These include computer workstations, photography and video equipment, scanners, drones and image editing, data analysis and design software packages.

Reynolds College and University Libraries to open Digital Humanities Lab Fall 2024

Missouri State University will have a new Digital Humanities Lab (DHL) beginning Fall 2024, thanks to a collaborative effort between the Reynolds College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (RCASH) and the Missouri State University Libraries.

Located in the lower lever of the Duane G. Meyer Library, the DHL will provide resources and guidance for faculty and students to create digital scholarship projects, according to RCASH Associate Dean Dr. Jason Jolley.

A ribbon-cutting opening ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m. Sept. 17 in the lower level of Meyer Library.

The event is open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Using technology to study cultures and societies

According to Jolley, the term “digital humanities” reflects an interdisciplinary approach to studying the humanities using digital tools and technologies. Subjects as wide-ranging as literature, languages, history and philosophy can all benefit from digital humanities research.

The primary goal of digital humanities research, he added, is to learn more about human societies. “Digital humanities scholars use computational methods to analyze, visualize and interpret cultural artifacts and texts,” Jolley said. “By employing techniques such as text mining, data visualization and digital mapping, digital humanities projects provide new insights and perspectives on human culture and society.”

Digital humanities scholars also use complex tools in their research, Jolley explained. Examples include high-resolution digital cameras, virtual reality systems for immersive historical experiences, scanning technologies and 3D modeling.

“These tools enable researchers to capture, analyze and present humanities data in innovative ways, making research more accessible and engaging to broader audiences,” he said.

Finally, in another use for digital humanities, research can be shared through online archives, interactive exhibits and open-access publications.

Missouri State’s new DHL will offer all these resources to students and faculty throughout the university community.

Dr. Heidi Backes publishes book on Spanish Gothic fiction

June 25, 2024 by Lynn M. Lansdown

Associate professor Dr. Heidi Backes has published her first book, “Spectral Spain: Haunted Houses, Silent Spaces and Traumatic Memories in Post-Franco Gothic Fiction,” through the University of Wales press.

“Spectral Spain” uses Spanish Gothic fiction to explore the connections between historical memory and the effects of twentieth-century Spanish fascism under Francisco Franco.

First published in the United Kingdom in May, the book will appear in North America in August through the University of Chicago Press, which is an affiliate of the University of Wales Press.

Backes said she felt “quite humbled” when she learned her book had been accepted for publication.

“The Gothic Literary Studies series at the University of Wales Press is one of the best academic series in the world for studies of Gothic fiction, and to have my scholarship selected to form part of that series has been a tremendous honor,” she said.

“Spectral Spain” incorporates Backes’ research and teaching at Missouri State University. She presented her initial research for the book in 2023 at the Reynolds College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Symposium.

Backes has taught at MSU for eight years in the Department of Languages, Cultures and Religions.

A fascination with Gothic fiction

Ever since she was a child reading R. L. Stine’s “Goosebumps” series, Backes has been fascinated by Gothic literature.

That fascination translated into an academic career. Backes earned her master’s and doctorate degrees in modern Spanish literature, specializing in Spanish Gothic fiction and twentieth century Spanish history.

“I am especially interested in twentieth century history and the Francisco Franco dictatorship (1939-1975),” she explained. “Many Gothic authors in Spain have written novels that take on the traumatic past in monstrous, ghostly forms.”

Backes is also drawn to how Gothic fiction explores themes of human psychology.

“There is something particularly meaningful about the way that the Gothic uses human psychology to teach us about ourselves and our societies — things that we may choose to ignore because they are too painful to acknowledge, things that frighten us, things that make us question the reality around us,” Backes said. A special moment of the celebration included recognizing MSU President Clif Smart and Gail Smart and then Dr. George Connor, professor of political science. All three received the Dean’s Legacy Award from Dean Shawn Wahl. Smart is set to retire on June 30. The legacy leadership and work of each recipient will continue to make a difference in the lives of RCASH members for generations to come.

Christopher DePriest, Mark Templeton, and Rob and Sally Baird were each honored with the Dean’s Champion Award. All have diligently worked, often behind the scenes, to positively impact RCASH.

MSU Alum Austin Elliott accepted the Dean’s Alumnus Award on behalf of Locke and Stache, a production company located in Springfield, Missouri. Locke and Stache was recognized for their exceptional achievements in video production.

The award ceremony concluded with The School of Criminology and Criminal Justice receiving the Dean’s Award of Distinction for excellent performance as an academic unit over the past year.

Named in honor of Reynolds, a dedicated staff member and role model for many years in the Department of English, the Judy Awards cover a variety of contributions to the college, ranging from traditional awards in teaching, research, and service to those that recognize collaboration, inclusive engagement and efforts to highlight the pillars of the University’s public affairs mission.

Except for the dean’s awards category, winners were nominated either by their peers or self-nominated, then selected by representatives from each academic department serving on the Judy Awards Selection Committee.

Hosts Dr. Alan Tinkler, Dr. Aida Hass-Wisecup and Mary Lynne Golden announced the following winners of the 2024 Judy Awards.
