News travels fast – even on a quiet summer afternoon

Communications expert Brian Ott talks digital chatter.

On a typical Sunday afternoon, most American’s aren’t checking news sites. But July 21 was anything but a typical Sunday afternoon.

That afternoon, President Joe Biden announced he was dropping out of the presidential race and news organizations worldwide saw spikes in online traffic.

Missouri State communication, media, journalism and film professor Dr. Brian Ott was in Serbia at the time, but even he heard the news.

“Our phones are constantly chirping at us and we have them with us all the time,” said he told the Associated Press. “My sense is that the compulsion is the same for everyone. In our digital world, information is capital, and everyone wants to demonstrate their capital.”
