October 12, 2021 by Deidre Mings

Special enrollment opportunities.

New Short Term Disability benefit and New Life insurance carrier.

Short Term Disability:

MSU is excited to offer a new voluntary benefit. We are pleased to announce Hartford has been selected to offer short term disability coverage. Short-term disability is designed to protect  income when an employee cannot work because of an off-the-job illness or injury.

  • Allows employees to choose base amount of coverage.
  • Payment, based on medical necessity, is paid up to employee’s ability to return to work or Long-term disability eligibility
  • Pre-existing conditions have minimum allowed amount of 4 weeks.
    • Pre-existing limitation does not apply after coverage in force for 1 year.
  • Rate locked for at least 3 years.
  • Guaranteed issue during open enrollment means no medical questions.
  • Does not offset other income
  • 2 coverage levels allows you to choose the option that fits your needs and works with your budget.

Action must be taken by you if you would like to enroll in this benefit during Open Enrollment (November 1st through December 1st, 2021). Policy will be effective January 1, 2022.

Term Life insurance:

Effective January 1, 2022, MSU will be changing carriers for Term life, Accidental Death & Dismemberment and Long-Term Disability. UNUM will replace New York Life Group Benefit solutions (formally Cigna) for basic and supplement term life, AD&D, and LTD benefits coverage. Your existing enrollment and coverage will move to UNUM, there will be no change in election costs and there is no action to take. However, you may want to take advantage of the special one-time opportunity:

Eligible employees may enroll in, or increase, employee and dependent supplemental term life coverage during Open Enrollment without providing health information to UNUM, also known as Evidence of Insurability (EOI).

  • Supplemental Life:
    • CURP participating Faculty – 1, 2, or 3 times your salary up to maximum of $300,000.
    • MOSER participating Faculty and Staff- 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 times your salary up to maximum of $300,000
    • Maximum coverage no longer includes your MSU paid Life insurance.
    • Coverage over $300,000 will require medical underwriting approval.
  • Spouse/Dependent Life Insurance:
    • Spouse guaranteed issue up to $30,000.
    • Options available up to $50,000 spouse coverage with medical underwriting approval.
    • Dependent children have guaranteed issue up to $20,000.
    • Coverage options cover spouse, child(ren), or spouse and child(ren) for one monthly premium.

This is a one-time opportunity available only during Open Enrollment (November 1st through December 1st, 2021). Action must be taken by you if you would like to enroll in or make an increase. During next year’s Open Enrollment, any increase to the life insurance coverage above would require additional approval by UNUM.
