Men’s Health Month:

June 9, 2025 by Deidre Mings

Stay Proactive, Stay Healthy

June is Men’s Health Month, a great reminder to take charge of your health through prevention, early detection, and informed care. The top health risks for men—heart disease, cancer, and unintentional injury—are often preventable with routine checkups and smart decisions.

Let’s make health a priority this month and every month.

🩺 Magers and Mercy Offer Support

Start with the basics: annual screenings and wellness visits.

  • Magers Health and Wellness Center offers biometric screenings year-round
  • Mercy Clinic Primary Care has providers across the region currently accepting new patients
    🔗 Find a provider: mercy.net/doctors

❤️ Cardiac & Cancer Screenings

Mercy Clinic Cardiology

  • Offers Calcium & Vascular Screenings to detect early signs of heart disease
    🔗 Visit: mercy.net/YourHeart

Mercy Clinic Urology

  • 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer
  • PSA testing is most beneficial between ages 55–69, according to the American Urological Association

💲 Don’t Forget—Wellness Pays!

If you’re enrolled in critical illness insurance through MSU, you may qualify for a $100 wellness reimbursement for covered preventive screenings like those listed above.

🧠 Mental Health & Support Services

Mental health is just as important as physical health. Whether you’re navigating stress, burnout, or just need someone to talk to, there are several supportive resources available:

  • Mental Health services are covered under MSU’s medical plans.
Use the Mercy Provider Directory or contact Magers Health and Wellness Center at 417-836-4000 for help finding a provider or referral.
  • Mercy’s Collaborative Care Program connects behavioral health specialists directly with your Mercy primary care provider for more personalized, coordinated care.
  • Visit the MSU Mental Health Resource Hub for crisis lines, community resources, self-screening tools, and peer support options.
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP):
Free, confidential counseling is available 24/7/365 for employees and their household members.

🛠️ Injury Care & Knowing Where to Go

From weekend projects to summer fun, injuries can happen—be prepared to get the right level of care without unnecessary cost.

💡 ER or Not? Know Where to Go

Not every injury needs an ER visit. Choosing the right care option can save you time and reduce your out-of-pocket costs.

Go to the ER for life-threatening emergencies like chest pain, trouble breathing, stroke symptoms, major injuries, or severe bleeding.
💸 In-network ER copays: $250 (Buy-Up Plan) | $500 (Base Plan)

For less serious needs, try these more convenient options:

  • Nurse On Call (MSU-insured, no Mercy PCP): 417-841-5566
  • Mercy On Call: Call your Mercy PCP office after hours
  • Magers Health & Wellness Center: Convenient on-campus care
  • Mercy Urgent Care: Quick access without an appointment

💼 Accident Insurance Can Help Cover Costs

If you’re enrolled in MSU’s Accident Insurance Plan, you and your covered dependents may be eligible for reimbursement on medical services related to accidental injuries, including:

  • Emergency room and urgent care visits
  • Diagnostic exams, X-rays, and physical therapy
  • Surgery, hospital stays, fractures, and more

📝 New elections may only be added during open enrollment (November 1–December 1).
