Your MSU Support Options: Ombuds & EAP

December 10, 2025 by Deidre Mings

Need Support? Understanding the Ombuds Office & Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

Missouri State University offers two valuable confidential resources to support employees facing challenges — the Ombuds Office and the Employee Assistance Program (EAP). While both are designed to help, they serve very different purposes.

Ombuds Office: A Neutral Space for Campus Concerns

The Ombuds Office provides a confidential, informal, and impartial place to discuss workplace or academic concerns. It’s ideal when you’re unsure where to start, want to talk through options, or need help navigating a difficult situation.

The Ombuds Office can help you:

  • Clarify concerns and explore solutions

  • Understand university policies

  • Improve communication or resolve conflicts informally

  • Find the right office for formal processes

The Ombuds Office does not:

  • Make decisions or take sides

  • Conduct investigations

  • Replace formal grievance or HR processes

  • Provide counseling or legal advice

If you need a neutral thought partner or guidance on campus-related issues, the Ombuds Office is a great first stop.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP): Free Counseling & Personal Support

The Employee Assistance Program is a benefit available to full- and part-time employees and their household members, offering free, confidential support 24/7/365 through Mercy.

EAP helps with personal, emotional, and family-related concerns, including:

  • Stress, anxiety, and mental health

  • Relationship or family issues

  • Substance use concerns

  • Financial or legal consultation

  • Work–life balance challenges

How to Access EAP:

  • Call: 314-729-4600 #2 or 1-800-413-8008 #2

  • Online: HelpWhereYouAre.com/CompanyLogin/1515/mercy

    • Username: MSU

    • Password: MSU

How They Differ

Ombuds Office Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
Helps with workplace concerns, conflict resolution, policy questions Helps with emotional, personal, family, financial, or mental health needs
Neutral, informal problem-solving—not therapy Professional counseling and support services
Discusses MSU processes and options Does not advise on university policy or conflict processes
Not a formal complaint channel Not involved in workplace investigations
Focus: campus navigation and conflict resolution Focus: personal well-being

Which Should You Use?

  • If you’re unsure how to navigate a workplace issue, want to talk through an MSU policy, or need help resolving a conflict → Ombuds Office.

  • If you’re experiencing stress, emotional strain, family concerns, or want personal counseling or wellness resources → EAP.

Both services are confidential, supportive, and designed to help you thrive at Missouri State.
