April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a national observance dedicated to raising awareness about sexual assault, harassment, and abuse while promoting prevention, education, and survivor support.
๐ง Why SAAM Matters
Sexual violence affects individuals across all ages, identities, and communities. SAAM is a time to:
- Increase awareness of sexual violence and its impact
- Promote prevention and education
- Support survivors and connect them with resources
- Strengthen safer, more informed communities
๐ History of SAAM
- 1970s: Advocacy efforts emerge, including Take Back the Night events
- 1990s: Expansion into Sexual Assault Awareness Week
- 2001: The National Sexual Violence Resource Center formally designates April as SAAM
Today, SAAM continues as a nationwide movement focused on prevention, education, and support.
