Allocation of Student Security Fee Recommended

May 4, 2011 by Kinsley Stocum

The Student Government Association has recommended that $100,000 of the Student Security Fee collection be allocated to help purchase 20-45 security cameras (depending on what can ultimately be funded) to be installed in the parking lots and other various locations around the Missouri State University campus; that, for the fall 2011 semester, $22,000 of the Student Security Fee collection be allocated to fund a student-cadet program, which would include five student workers four nights a week; and that Safe Walk Services be extended to both Cherry and Elm Streets when student cadets are working.

Students have voiced concern regarding the lack of security cameras in various areas on campus, as well as an interest in extending the current limits of the Safe Walk.  The student-cadet program has been a project specific to SGA’s Administrative and Information services committee, headed by Director Austin Kramer.  Missouri State students pay a five dollar Student Security Fee every semester to maintain our current safety and security operations and the Safety & Transportation Department uses the money collected to make yearly improvements to campus safety and security.

Creation of Social Entrepreneurship Course Recommended

May 4, 2011 by Kinsley Stocum

Student Government Association has recommended that a class be created that includes information regarding social entrepreneurship, social business, and social change efforts, and that this type of course be considered by the General Education Task Force for inclusion in the to-be-revised General Education program.

The Student Affairs Committee, headed by Director Katherine Shellenberg, noted student interest in such ideas as social change and social entrepreneurship (supported, in part, by the large turnout to Blake Mycoskie’s TOMS Shoes presentation in Fall 2010) and further noted that students would benefit from taking a class that emphasizes social entrepreneurship and the not-for-profit sector.

Dr. Belinda McCarthy, Provost, has also shown interest in a class that would encourage students to organize, create, and manage a venture to achieve social change.

Trial Schedule Tool Available In Time for Spring Semester

April 27, 2011 by Kinsley Stocum

After research on potential scheduling tools was undertaken by the Student Government Association’s Academic Affairs committee last semester, a team of representatives was formed to address the identified need to replace the former trial schedule tool lost during the Banner ERP implementation, the recovery of which will significantly help students with course planning.

The team extensively researched and considered all options and decided to recommend College Scheduler, LLC for purchase.  College Scheduler, LLC has many helpful capabilities, such as the ability to generate schedules by evaluating all combinations of class offerings and the ability to enter breaks and filter schedules based on times the student wants to schedule around.  The President offered to use his Reserve Budget to cover implementation costs and recurring services fees associated with the product for both the Springfield and West Plains campuses.

The new trial schedule tool will be implemented for spring registration in the fall semester.
