Jennifer Richey: receives prestigious Griffith Scholarship

Jennifer Richey, from Holt, Missouri is a current student in the Risk Management and Insurance Program. For the 2014-2015 academic year, she was selected as one of 21 students from across the country to receive the prestigious Griffith Scholarship. This year, The Griffith Foundation awarded $63,000 in scholarship funds to undergraduate and graduate students studying insurance, risk management or actuarial science.
“I have known since I was a freshman that I wanted to pursue a career in the insurance industry. With the Griffith Insurance Education Foundation Scholarship, I will be able to finish my senior year with less financial burden and be able to focus more on my studies and future career goals,” states Jennifer.
Jennifer contributes much of her success to Missouri State, and to one professor in particular, Dr. Stanley Adamson. “Dr. Adamson is the professor who had shined the light on the insurance industry and led me down the path that I am currently going down. He has gone above and beyond for me and many of his students. With his help, I have received multiple scholarships and internship opportunities. Dr. Adamson has definitely made my experience at MSU a great one.”
When she is not busy in classes, Jennifer serves as the President for Gamma Iota Sigma the International Risk Management, Insurance and Actuarial Science Collegiate Fraternity. She has also held two internships. The first internship was with Katie Clouse’s State Farm office in Ozark, Missouri and the second was with City Utilities in Springfield, where she worked in the Risk Management department.
At the State Farm office, Jennifer was able to earn her Property & Casualty and Life & Health licenses to sell insurance in the state of Missouri, as well as see how an insurance agent handles his or her job on a day-to-day basis. At City Utilities, she assisted risk managers with daily duties and visited with other departments to learn about how they coordinate with risk management.
“Both internships allowed me to better understand the material that I was learning in the classroom. Internships are important because they allow you to see how things truly work rather than just learning about them,” states Jennifer.
Many congratulations to Jennifer on her success. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for this bright business bear!
