As the entertainment industry continues to evolve, one individual stands out as a driving force, shaping the landscape of live events.
Joseph Phillips, a dynamic professional, embarked on a career in venue management that began at Missouri State University in 2009. He is now the production manager for the most technologically advanced entertainment venue in the world – the Sphere in Las Vegas, Nevada.
This job couldn’t get more exciting for Phillips.
“I’m currently working on the upcoming Formula 1 race in Vegas. I’ve done over 25 Harry Styles shows, 10 Eagles shows, and have worked with artists from Bad Bunny to BTS. I also did the Taylor Hawkins Memorial,” Phillips said.
The MSU years
At Missouri State, Phillips pursued a bachelor’s degree in entertainment management with a focus on artist and venue management. He graduated in 2012.
“I was fortunate enough to know what direction I wanted my career to go since college, and I’ve been chasing my goals ever since,” he said.
From California to Las Vegas
Phillips grew up in California and later moved to St. Louis, Missouri, during high school. After college, his career took him to Philadelphia for an internship and then to New York City for a year. However, he spent majority of his career in Los Angeles from 2012 until 2023, before moving to Vegas.
A life devoted to live events

Phillips has been immersed in the world of live events, consistently pursuing his passion. His career started in a music management office, and he later transitioned into the world of touring.
“My life has been live events and chasing the dream!” he said.
From 2016 to 2023, he worked at the Forum in Inglewood, where he held the position of event manager and director of events. During this time, the Forum received multiple Arena Venue of the Year and Arena of the Decade awards from Pollstar.
“In that time, I was able to help produce hundreds of concerts for the top touring acts in the world and made some amazing memories along the way,” Phillips said. “I did the calculation once and worked out that I helped produce concerts with over 10 million people in attendance in just under seven years, which brings me so much joy.”
From mechanical engineering to live music
Phillips’s journey is a testament that the pursuit of one’s true passion pays off. He initially enrolled in college with the intent of becoming a mechanical engineer; a path considered “safe.” But he soon realized he was better suited for something else.
“Since I’m no musician, touring and managing a legendary music venue was what worked best for me!” he said.
Despite the challenges and uncertainties in the industry, his dedication to organizing live events and overseeing music venues became his driving force.
Greatest accomplishments: perseverance and impact
Phillips’s ability to outwork everyone around him has propelled him to where he is today, making him a significant contributor to the industry that brings joy to millions.
“I pushed through the hard times where I had no money to my name and couldn’t afford to eat. I’m very proud of all my work and grateful for the work ethic my parents instilled in me at a young age,” he said.
Shaping the future of live entertainment
Phillips’s current role at the Sphere, demonstrates his ongoing commitment to pushing the boundaries of live entertainment.
“The work we’re doing at the Sphere will change the live entertainment world forever. This is very exciting,” he said.
Some valuable advice
Phillips advises students to get relevant experience.
“Experience trumps all! Say yes to opportunities in any field that touches the live entertainment industry,” he said. “Having a detailed understanding of multiple fields gives you an upper hand when it comes to managing activities within those departments.”
