Missouri State University senior Kelly Sego is a high achiever both inside and outside of the classroom.
Hailing from Chicago, Sego found her way to MSU to pursue a business education and shine in athletics. Not only is she majoring in finance – financial planning and minoring in international business, but she is also on track to complete an accelerated MBA in December 2025.
In addition to her studies, Sego is a competitive swimmer.
“I’m on the Missouri State Swimming and Diving team and am so honored to be able to represent the school at a collegiate level,” Sego said.
Choosing MSU
Sego’s introduction to MSU stemmed from her search for colleges with strong business programs and competitive athletic teams. MSU’s reputable College of Business (COB) caught her attention.
“I’ve loved the business program and classes I’ve been able to take so far,” Sego said.
“The courses I’ve taken are extremely applicable to the professional skills I will need for my future employment, and I can confidently say the COB has prepared me well for my future endeavors.”
Sego acknowledges the pivotal role played by her professors, particularly Dr. Seth Hoelscher and Dr. Jana Ault-Phillips, in her academic journey.
Balancing academics and athletics
One of the biggest lessons Sego has learned while being a student-athlete is how to manage her time.
“With practices twice a day and weeks where I’m constantly traveling, it’s necessary to have a great relationship with my professors and manage my time diligently.”
At the recent 12th annual Maroon and White Honors Banquet and Scholar-Athlete Awards ceremony, Sego received several accolades:
- Scholar Athlete of the Year Award – for graduating student-athletes holding the highest cumulative grade point averages (GPAS); Sego has a perfect 4.0 GPA.
- Missouri Valley Conference Board of Directors Academic Excellence Award.
- Dr. Bruce Johnson Scholars – for individuals who have been recognized at the Maroon and White Banquet for four years.
“I think my biggest motivation over the years has been making my team and parents proud and representing Missouri State as best I can!” Sego said. “I’ve had so many opportunities available thanks to being a student at this university, and it feels amazing to see all my hard work starting to pay off.”
An encouraging message
Sego’s advice to current and future students is simple yet profound: seize every opportunity that comes your way.
“To get the most out of your MSU experience, take advantage of as many opportunities as you can,” she said. “There are many clubs, organizations and teams offered to help you meet people. It’s also a great way to start building your network and make connections that could make a big difference someday.”
