Judges from Missouri State University and college and universities across the country review each award application to determine the recipient. MSU Leaders Take on IMPACT

During the weekend of January 19, seventy student leaders including IFC, NPHC, and PHA chapter presidents and council executive boards headed to Windermere Conference Center for a beginning of the year leadership retreat called IMPACT. IMPACT is a program from the North American Interfraternity Conference and is a campus-based leadership institute designed to foster improved relationships among campus leaders through an intensive interactive program. The program also emphasizes problem solving, leadership and community development, effective communication, and values-based decision making. During the weekend, leaders also identified and confronted issues facing their chapters and the Fraternity and Sorority Life community as a whole.

Many of the participants commented on their favorite part of the weekend. Brittany Buchannon, NPHC Chapter President and member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. said “my favorite part about impact would have to be our break away sessions. This gave us the opportunity to speak freely and more candidly without much pressure from the entire retreat population. We were able to specify strategies to improve our councils as well as build more personal comfort and relationships with one another.” Alpha Chi Omega Chapter President, Alyssa Kohrs said, “I enjoyed the networking opportunities that I gained while I was at IMPACT. Getting to know all the other amazing people from the PHA, IFC, and NPHC community was so beneficial and making those connections will be useful for this upcoming year.”

The attendees gained lots of tools to help them conquer the upcoming year and make an impact on the community. Morgan Drury, Gamma Phi Beta Chapter President said, “I am most excited to make effective changes in our community this year. After having time to collaborate as leaders, we have talked about a few different things that we would like to accomplish together. I can’t wait to help improve not only my chapter but the FSL community as a whole!” Carter William, IFC President and member of Sigma Nu Fraternity said he learned a great deal about “creating cohesion across all of FSL.” He also commented about one of the sessions they attended saying, “we as FSL members truly dove into what our image is as a community[…] also addressing the harsh realities that our FSL community is encountering and working with others to plan strategies to address those realities.” Elliot McComas, Theta Chi Chapter President, shared, “I’m excited for the chance to put my chapter in a place where they can flourish into the best version of themselves. I want to use my position to empower our members to make an impact on campus and in the Springfield community and turn our culture into one that is built on service.”

We are so proud of the impact these leaders will make not only in their chapters, or in their councils, but across our campus and Springfield community this next year!

NPHC Step Show 2018

October 20th, members of our National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) came together to participate in their Homecoming Step Show. The step show is a crowd pleasing event in which NPHC chapters compete against one another in a step performance to be titled the winner! This fall, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. and Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. took the title.

Aside from the NPHC steppers, there were other performances as well. NPHC’s President, Brittany Buchannon said, “my favorite part was definitely Essence of Hip Hop and the ASA performance. I think they captured the audience well and their performances were along the lines of stepping as well. It all flowed so nicely together.”

An immense amount of time from every individual chapter is spent prepping for the show. When talking about the prep work that went in to it Brittany said, “We [her chapter] practiced Wednesday through Sunday for at least an hour and max of three hours. We had to film our video, test music for strolling and get costumes together. So many things went into making the show great.” Ja’Kel Ringo, a committee member of the show, said the following of her chapter’s prep work, “there is a lot of prepping that Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. have to do, such as figuring out what steps we want to do, making sure that everybody is on the same page when being taught the steps, trying to match everybody’s schedules up, and much more.” Their hard work did not go unnoticed, as they were titled the winners of the show.

Many of the NPHC executive members and step show committee members spoke of the success of the show and their excitement for next years to be done even bigger and better! Committee Member Jayveon Harris said, “The attendance we expected was surpassed extensively. All the teams that we had participate were crisp and clean…The feedback I have been receiving from outside spectators has been widely positive. So all in all I believe that we did a good job giving the campus the show they’ve been longing for. We just look forward to looking back to see how we can improve the show even more for next year!”

Great job to all our NPHC chapters that participated! We already can’t wait for next years show!

 

 

 

 

Missouri State FSL Heads to AFLV

On February 8th, Missouri State’s Interfraternity Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council, as well as the Panhellenic Association headed to Indianapolis, Indiana to attend AFLV Central.

The Association of Fraternal Leadership & Values exists to stimulate the growth and development of fraternity/sorority councils, chapters, and members by promoting leadership, educational, and values based experiences and resources for student leaders, their advisors, and the larger fraternal market.

 

This year AFLV featured a variety of speakers. Lawrence Ross spoke on campus racism. James Robilotta, who has joined our community for the past couple of years to speak at Missouri State’s New Member Day, authentically spoke on how to inspire open communication and how to form tighter bonds that cause members to be more engaged. Joe Biden, Former Vice President of the United States, was also among the keynote speakers. Biden engaged attendees in a frank conversation about sexual assault on college campuses and the ongoing prevention work being done through the It’s On Us campaign.

 

Daniel Tedder, VP of Membership Development on IFC, said, “My favorite part of AFLV were thepersonal growth opportunities that were available to us at the conference. Whether we wanted to develop our abilities to work within the community, personally, or professionally, AFLV provided the opportunity and the space to do that. The conference really felt like a starting point for our executive board. As a group, we became very close and learned how to work with each other. We [were] able to bounce ideas off of each other and build strong relationships.”

 

 

Madison Henry, VP of Recruitment on PHA, reflects on her experience at AFLV saying, “AFLV was an amazing experience to meet other leaders of fraternities and sororities across the nation! I spent most of my time going to educational sessions over values-based recruitment; therefore, I learned a lot of ways to make sure that we are giving PNM’s a fully values-based experience… Sororities were made to empower and develop women, and it’s our job to make sure that we are pushing our FSL community to be the best that it can be.”

 

Jackson Giebler, IFC President, says, “While at AFLV we had the opportunity to hear from Greek leaders from around the nation, including former Vice President Joe Biden. They spoke on topics ranging from the importance of self governance and leading our communities, to expanding the awareness of sexual assault on college campuses. AFLV helped us further understand the current state of fraternities and how we can combat internal issues in our community in order to better our members. By the end of the conference, we felt more prepared on an individual level and as team to lead the IFC in 2018.

Brittany Buchannon, NPHC Treasurer, shared, “the most beneficial thing I learned, was that as a leader in fraternity and sorority life you’re not gonna be perfect and you may not always get it right, but you have to keep trying and keep working for what’s best for the community.” Brittany also expressed how “informative and real” keynote speaker Dr. Ross was. “Overall I learned a lot about leadership and how to relieve some of the pressure that comes with it” she says.
