Missouri State alum Katie Mulloy started her first job post graduation in a big way: working the Super Bowl. Graduated in May 2014 with a public relations degree and a minor in marketing, Katie packed up a few months later and moved from her home in the Chicago area to Phoenix. Super Bowl XLIX was one of her first big events. But now, approximately a year later, she has more tasks and big games under her belt as Marketing Coordinator for Global Spectrum at the University of Phoenix Stadium.

During the last month, Katie added the College Football Playoff National Championship game between Alabama and Clemson and the NFL playoff game pitting the Green Bay Packers against the Arizona Cardinals to her “big game” repertoire. During the College Football Championship Game, she did much of the same things she did during the Super Bowl, including managing the social media platforms, taking pictures before, during and after the event, and maintaining the website, but now, a year later, she feels more like a “pro.” Since the beginning of her job, she has already added running social media contests and promotions for events and creating graphics for marketing assets to her hefty list of duties.
In between the more popular, nationally-televised football games, Katie says she gets to market many different types of events. With a field that can move outside, the University of Phoenix Stadium can host trade and consumer shows, concerts, international soccer games, motorsports and more. Once, there was a LEGO KidsFest, and the entire show floor was covered in LEGOS, including a giant pile of LEGO bricks, a play area for children to get creative and play games in and huge LEGO statues. “There is never a dull moment at the stadium,” she says, which makes it easy to maintain social media platforms.
When Super Bowl XLIX came around February 2014, Katie was very new to her position. Looking back on everything she’s had the opportunity to work on in the past year, she says she reminds herself to enjoy it. “One thing that I wish I would have known before the Super Bowl was how to take a step back…and look at all of the hard work that had been put in,” she says.
Now, with the Arizona Cardinals games, Super Bowl, and College Football National Championship game, as well as two Fiesta Bowls, a Pro Bowl and three international soccer games—just to name the sports—Katie can say, “the events come and go, but the memories are unforgettable.” Her favorite part of the bigger sporting events is to look at the stadium before the guests come in. “(It) always looks incredible, and it is so peaceful and quiet…You can catch me with my camera out almost every time.”
Now a year in, Katie says she absolutely loves working for the professional sports industry. Her ultimate goal is to one day work for the Olympics, but for now she plans to continue to gain valuable experience at the University of Phoenix Stadium.
