The Intergenerational Exhibition, inspired by a gerontology class on intergenerational art expression, can be viewed at Missouri State University’s Cabot Gallery July 5-August 4 and during the August 4 First Friday Art Walk from 6-8 p.m.
Taught by psychology instructor Diane Denton, the GER 397-Intergenerational Art Expression course was launched in the Spring 2023 semester. The class was comprised of traditional undergraduate students and members of Missouri State’s MSU 62 Community, a fee waiver program for adults age 62 and older. With the larger goal of erasing stereotypes each age group might hold about the other, the class focused on art skills and creative expression, encouraging its younger and senior members to share their perspectives through art built around themes of joy, curiosity and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The exhibition showcases the group projects, individual work and written descriptions of the students’ experiences created during the course. Denton, describing herself as passionate about storytelling, said she hoped viewers of the exhibit would see not just flowers and landscapes but also “diversity, story and the artist voice.”
The exhibition is located in the Cabot Gallery, Brick City Building 3 at 215 West Mill Street, Springfield, MO 65806 [map]. The gallery is open Tuesday-Friday 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Contact the Department of Art and Design at 417-837-2330 for additional details.
