Linguistics Colloquium Series continues for spring 2024

Missouri State University’s linguistics program has announced Dr. Eduardo D. Faingold, professor of Spanish and linguistics at the University of Tulsa, will headline MSU’s spring 2024 Linguistics Colloquium Series.

Faingold will discuss a chapter from his book, “Language rights and the law in Scandinavia: Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Iceland, the Faroe Islands and Greenland.”

“This semester we are privileged to have Dr. Faingold share with us some of his recent work on language rights and the law in Iceland in the context of immigrants’ education,” said Dr. Antoinette Barffour, associate professor of French and applied linguistics.

English department hosts tenth annual undergraduate literature conference April 18-19, 2024

The Department of English will host the tenth annual MSU Undergraduate Literature Conference (ULC) April 18-19, 2024, in Hill Hall, Room 001 on the Missouri State University campus.

The ULC welcomes papers that examine a piece of literature or a cultural text (film, television series or video game). Previous presentation topics have ranged from Chaucer to disability studies to graphic narrative.

Past presenters have included students from MSU, Drury University, Evangel University, Ozarks Technical Community College, College of the Ozarks, Webster University, University of Florida and New York University-Shanghai.

Student submissions are being accepted until Friday, Feb. 23, 2024, through the conference website. A conference schedule will be available in early March.

The conference is free and open to the public.

Three internal job postings in RCASH for academic unit leaders

The Judith Enyeart Reynolds College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (RCASH) has openings for three academic unit leaders. Two department head positions are available in the School of the Arts to lead the music and theatre and dance departments. The third department head position is for the communication, media, journalism and film department in the School of Communication.

These internal job postings are only available to current full-time employees of Missouri State University. The first date of consideration is Feb. 16, 2024. A review of applications will continue until the positions are filled.

Felbab-Brown to discuss global illicit drug trade Feb. 5

Dr. Vanda Felbab-Brown, a leading expert on the political aspects of the international illicit drug trade, will give a talk on the topic Monday, Feb. 5 from 5-6:30 p.m. in Karls Hall 101.

In “The Global Synthetic Drugs Revolution: Its Geopolitical Implications and Impact Across Latin America,” Felbab-Brown will focus on the synthetic drug trade, which includes fentanyl, methamphetamine and captagon, and how that trade affects Latin America.

The event is free and open to the public.

Open call for 2024 Tent Theatre auditions now in progress

Calling all actors! The non-equity open call for the 2024 Tent Theatre season is underway.

Open call submissions are being accepted by video only. Performers of all ethnicities, gender identities, abilities and ages, are encouraged to audition.

The submission deadline is Feb. 2, 2024.

2024 season features three new productions

Fans of Tent Theatre can look forward to new productions this 2024 season, all performed in the John Goodman Amphitheatre.

Starting the lineup will be “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical,” which will run June 6-8 and 10-15. The second show scheduled for the 2024 season is “Crimes of the Heart,” running June 21-22 and 24-29. The season will conclude with “Mystic Pizza,” which will run July 5-6 and 8-13.
