Environmental Communication class highlights university’s public affairs mission

When communication majors began enrolling for Spring 2026 classes, they encountered a new offering: Environmental Communication. Structured as a second block online class, this was the first time Environmental Communication had been offered as part of the communication studies curricula.

The course is another choice within the fully online option of the communication studies program, according to Senior Instructor Jay Howard. Its purpose is to help students understand the role of communication in negotiating the relationship between people and the environment.

Howard, who teaches in the Department of Communication, Media, Journalism and Film, created the class as a special topics course. He was thrilled when 29 students enrolled, a number just a bit over the class limit.

Most of the students were upper level communications majors, Howard said. “But we did have people from other majors as well find their way into the class, which I was happy to see. And if I get to teach the class again, I’d love to continue to expand and have people enrolled from all across the university.”

Consumers of environmental messaging

Throughout the course, Howard stressed to students how all members of a society are “consumers” of environmental communication. While not everyone will become a public official or climate activist, he noted, people engage in and consume environmental communication daily.

“We need to be able to critically evaluate [this communication] and have some tools for knowing whether the messaging coming at us is accurate or not,” Howard said. “See what they’re trying to get us to do, and why, and whose agenda is being served.”

Because environmental issues tend to affect entire communities and societies, not just individuals, the topic itself can have a wide reach and impact.

“It’s big, it crosses boundaries, has all kinds of stakeholders that all have to cooperate,” Howard said. “There’s a collective action problem. And when you’re trying to coordinate action, you have to use communication.”

Chess Club hosts first event for 2025-26 season

September 15, 2025 by Lynn Lansdown

Missouri State University’s Chess Club opened its 2025-26 season with an informal competition on Sept. 3 in Strong Hall’s atrium.

Over 20 students attended the event, which featured a blitz chess competition.

Interested players first participated in a casual, meet-and-greet session that emphasized non-competitive play. The club set up chess boards at several individual tables in the atrium, allowing players to chat while they played and enjoyed free pizza.

Afterward, the club held an informal blitz chess competition. Blitz chess is a playing format during which each game lasts three to five minutes.

Chess Club will host two more events during the fall semester: Oct. 1 and Nov. 5. Both events are from 3-5 p.m. in the Strong Hall atrium.

Chess Club is for everyone

Jay Howard, one of the faculty advisors for Chess Club, looks on as players engage in blitz chess.

Two faculty members of the Reynolds College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (RCASH), Jay Howard and Nick Beatty, serve as Chess Club advisors. Howard is a senior instructor in the Department of Communication, Media, Journalism and Film. Beatty is an instructor in the Department of Political Science and Philosophy.

Even though it is advised by RCASH faculty, Howard emphasized that Chess Club is open to everyone, regardless of their playing level, their major or their status at the university.

“There are several faculty members who play as well as students, both undergraduate and graduate,” Howard said. “We’ve got community members here who aren’t students or faculty. So, it’s open to everyone.”

As a geology major, senior Connor Burns reflects Chess Club’s broader outreach at Missouri State. He has been with Chess Club since his sophomore year.

“It’s just fun,” Burns said. “I don’t have a lot of free time, but getting to come around here and play chess with people over the board is a lot better than being a recluse somewhere and playing it online.”

Junior psychology major Grant Howison also reflects Chess Club’s mission to be open to all. Like Burns, he has been part of Chess Club since his sophomore year and attends every meeting.

“I think it’s a lot of fun,” Howison said.

Meanwhile, freshman theatre and dance major Julie Kate Moylan is not a member of Chess Club. She joined the event, however, simply because she likes chess. For her, the game is “a great way to learn and maybe advance problem-solving skills. I think that’s a really good aspect of chess.”

Since starting his podcast work in 2020, Jay Howard has interviewed a collector, a college dean, a philosopher and a community organizer.

Howard explains that he was inspired by the collaborative efforts put into building the “brand-new college,” referencing the recent formation of the Reynolds College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (RCASH) at Missouri State University.

“Since my goal is to interview the people who make up the college, the name ‘Making CASH’ seemed to fit. Also, the name needed to be something people could easily remember and subscribe to,” he added. [Read more…] about RCASH gets a spotlight on “Making CASH” podcast
